Alot of interesting history when visiting the sugar cane factory, would go to calheta beach daily but never visited the factory. Went in there as was intrigued what was in aguardente which is fire-water a Portuguese drink.
Really enjoyed the visit, tasted real Madeira cake which was nothing like what we are used to in the UK, it’s very like Christmas cake, really tasty. We also tried Poncha, a local drink, quite sweet & quite strong!
Visited this distillery and enjoyed the self guided tour of the plant. Nice to see old machinery still in use. Plenty of old photographs and information around the site.
Situated in a small village by the sea made for a pleasant hour or so.
