From the top of its 905 metres, the sacred Basque Country mountain of La Rhune provides one of the best panoramas imaginable (rated *** in the Michelin Guide). As far as the eye can see, it takes in the peaks of the Pyrenees and follows the Basque coast bordering the Atlantic Ocean from San Sebastián to Biarritz and on to the beaches of Les Landes.

Located about 20 minutes out of Saint Jean de Luz, this mountain train is certainly worth a visit. You can buy either a one way ticket and hike back from the top (about two-two and half hours hike down) or take the train back down. Spectacular views from the top but be sure to visit when the weather is good.... More

La Rhune was recommended by friends and fortunately we were blessed with fantastic weather ,still able to be in just a t-shirt at the summit but be prepared for cold and the weather changing. Get there early if you can as queues to get on train are long or better still pre-book a day and time in advance on-line. Great... More

This lovely little train rises incredibly swiftly up the side of a mountain through rugged Basque countryside to the summit where views of the coast and other peaks are stunning. We visited in the week before Easter and it was relatively quiet although the weather may have been partly to blame. Sadly the summit was cloudy and views were tantalisingly... More

The views are awesome on the coast and on the mountains. Its the activity to do during your stay to discover the life inside the country side (don't hesitate to stop in each village, to eat in small restaurants...) and to see the beauty of the region. The traditional train goes up to La Rhune summit in 35 minutes (9km/h)... More

The petit train de la Rhune is the best way to get to the top of this particular mountain, though you can walk up if you are really keen. The train works by rack and pinion and you slowly wind your way up to the top from where you can see the lighthouse at Biarritz on a clear day. There... More

Here in the South west of France, this is one of the top 10 things to do, which is a most. Always check the weather forecast and make sure it is a day with a clear sky. Buy the ticket online or with a Tourist office to avoid long queues. The parking is not that big, so be early in... More

Ride the cog train up the mountain. The ride takes about 35 minutes where you can look out the windows at roaming horses, cattle, goats, and sheep. If the weather becoming in-climate you can close the fabric curtains. At the top you will be right on the peak between Spain and France. You can put a foot on each side.... More

We loved the train which was one of the highlights of our holiday. Although it is not necessary to pre-book it is advisable to do so as there seem to be large groups of people travelling to the summit. The day we went started cloudy but as we ascended the mountain the clouds cleared and the summit was visible. When... More

Cog wheel railway brings you to the top of the mountain, 905 meters (2900 feet) above sea level. The train itself is a pleasant ride. It is very steep in places. You might see the ponies that roam freely on the mountain during the 40 minute trip up. The train has bench seats that sit 5 across. Sit on the... More

Lovely little train that chugs up along some really steep gradients. The views are stunning - make sure you go on a sunny day and the cafes at the top are very reasonable. Get there early, by the time we came down at about 1pm - the queues were horrendous.
