Looks like being on the moon

Cha de Caldeiras is very impressive with its people building their houses directly on top and in between the fields of lava. They grow very good vine and coffee which can be bought there directly. The territory is absolutely incredible with different types of lava and the big vulcano. It is possible to walk to Pico Pequeno and the eruption site of 2014/2015. When hiking, a guide is recommended.

1km high and the views at the top are worth it (before you ask!-)

Depending on your fitness it's between 3hrs and 4hrs to hike up and then much less to get down! The trail is NOT paved and can be difficult if you suffer from vertigo but put all that aside, get a guide and do it..!

PS> Start early and take plenty of water as it gets very hot as the sun comes up!

we spent 3 days in the caldeira and went up to the top of the volcano, and also to the Small Pico where the eruption of 2015 took place.
People living in the caldeira are really nice.

Fantastic holiday

Just came back from pune in India, and it was amazing, the sights and smells were great and even though everyone said we would get the dreaded deli belly, we were fortunate and did not suffer at all. The people are so friendly and the market was a riot of colours and lots going on, was great to haggle just for the fun of it, as things are so cheap.

Amazing yet challenging.
Oct. 2019
I read most of these reviews before going on the trip and although they are all accurate as to the amazing experience you’ll have, they were a bit understated as to how challenging it was. It is absolutely worth climbing the volcano, but it definitely took more effort than I had expected. It will take using your hands for climbing during the last hour due to the steepness of the terrain. The other reviews led us to believe there would be some sort of walking/ minor climbing path the whole way. Although there is a “trail” it’s definitely steep at points. My thighs were sore for about five days after the climb, but obviously worth it. Maybe we’re just old and out of shape but two of us made it up and two didn’t. I just wanted to put that information out there so people can prepare. Still, hands down a must do, amazing experience!

A must do in Cabo Verde
Mar. 2019 • Couples
The Pico do Fogo is one of the coolest things in Cabo Verde, in the Fogo Island. It is tricky to get to as it is quite remote, but it's a unique experience. Get on an 'aluguer' at the Sao Filipe airport and you'll save money.

Trip highlight!
Nov. 2018 • Friends
Going up to the top of the Pico do Fogo was definitelly the highlight of the Cabo Verde trip! The view is amazing and both going up (the main volcano) as well as down (on the 2014 volcano side) give quite the adrenaline thrust. Hire a guide in Cha das Caldeiras to guide up the volcano. Great!

Fogo experience
Feb. 2019 • Solo
I have just returned from 2 nights in Fogo. Make no mistake, everyone is very friendly and helpful (even tough I don't speak Portugues nor Kriol). I took a Collectiva from Sao Filipe to the tiny village at the foothills of the volcano, 1000$ (escuedos). Each way. It picked me up from where i was staying at 11 am and took 2 hours each way. Scenery was amazing. Something different! When in the village i needed help
To find somewhere to stay for 2 nights. The driver found me a house, lovely bedroom and lovely clean bathroom. When i settled down, i was told there was no electricity (there was a generator but only used sometimes) and the beaitiful bathroom had little or no water!) fortunately i had my own water and food but no hot drinks till
I returned to Sao Filipe. 20000$ a night). The family was very kind, spoke English. Life is tough up there. Interesting walks, long dark nights but peaceful! I am glad i went. Rosemary

An amazing climb to a fantastic volcano crater.
Feb. 2019 • Couples
Climbed this mountain which takes you up to one of the best craters in the world. The island of Fogo regularly faces volcanic eruptions and you can visit a number of the craters in the area. Many people climb up to Pico and return in roughly the same direction. I would recommend returning by visiting the 2014 crater which allows you not only to visit the crater but to experience an amazing scree run on the volcanic ash which is mega fun. I also recommend climbing to the summit. It does involve a bit of climbing and using via ferrata but not too difficult. The descent is a bit more scary but it's worth it to say that you've climbed to the highest point in Cape Verde.
