Not much to see
Aug. 2021
Having been in many other caves, we were disappointed. The Lava Tube was relatively short and had practically no cave formations. Most of the 45 minute tour was spent going up and down the steel spiral stairways. There were no bathrooms at the site. It was not worth the cost of admission.

Spectacular tour! A highlight of our Iceland trip!
Aug. 2021
This tour of the Vatnshellir lava cave right near Snaefellsjokull was spectacular! The guide we had was fantastic--he spoke very clearly in English (and Icelandic for the locals) and he had a great sense of humor. He provided great background about the formation of the cave and its geology. He demonstrated patience in answering all questions thoroughly and kindly took a family picture at the end.

It's really cool to walk down the narrow spiral staircase and then, later, down another one. Once you're at the lowest point of the cave (=nearly ten stories below ground), the guide asks us to turn off our lights and close our eyes--while his flashlight is still on. Then he turns his off and we open our eyes. Total darkness, like the Biblical plague in Egypt: looking around, you can see absolutely nothing whatsoever! I will add that not having any built-in lights in the cave made the tour exciting--only we can light our way through with our flashlights.

The location is great, as it's perfect to begin "stepping into the center of the earth" right near Snaefellsjokull. Also, the price of this tour is notably lower than other lava caves in Iceland with no decrease in the quality of the experience. Our family really loved this exciting tour. If you are anywhere near this area, make sure you reserve this tour (reserving in advance is recommended to avoid it being full)--it will create unforgettable memories!

Poorly Organized and Executed
Jul. 2021 • Family
This review is for the company that does the tours. They have a monopoly on guiding people in the cave and suffer from all that entails. The guide was clearly bored with doing the same tour and lame jokes over and over again. Group size was 19 people with one guide single file through a cave. Basically zero safety discussion. Total zoo between tours with one group dropping off equipment and the other group gearing up. No office staff, just the guide trying to get everything done in the 15 minutes between tours. Cave itself was cool, but I would skip this if you have room in your itinerary to literally go to any other cave in Iceland instead.

Wonderful experience

We went on this tour last week and had a great time! It was our first time in a lava cave and we found the colours to be beautiful. Our guide Thor was very knowledgeable and explained to us how the caves are formed as well as a few troll related legends! We felt very safe on this tour, everyone kept their masks on the whole time. I would recommend doing this tour if you are in the area!

Great experience!

This tour is a must if you come to this area. We went for the 45 min tour with a guide. Because of Covid-19 we did not book in advance (I think it is normally a popular tour, so booking in advance is recommended). We just met up at the cave. Tours two times a day: 13:00 and 14:00. It was a very informative and thrilling tour. Our guide was very good, telling stories about the cave. At one point we were asked to turn of all light and just stand in the cave and hear the dripping and experience the total darkness. Very cool!

Amazing

We went there spontaneously and it was just amazing. Walking through the caves with torches and being in total darkness for a short moment (just listening to the sound of the cave) was a great experience. Our guide was funny and very friendly and we would definitely recommend the visit.

Fantastic nature lava cave
Jun. 2019
Quite an interesting tour to find out more about volcano cave. Visiting this beautiful cave was a unique experience. Vatnshellir was created in a volcanic eruption some 8,000 years ago. Enjoy the quick walk to go down 30 meters under ground approximately. When you explore Vatnshellir, you will descend into a subterranean cavern of stalactites and stalagmites. Best part is to experience complete darkness when all lights are turned down. You see nothing and just hear the water dropping from the top of the cave. A must to visit for an adventurous experience.

Glad we went, but not spectacular!
Feb. 2020
Went on a tour of the Lava Tube. My family of 4 and another couple went on the tour with the guide. I've never been in a lava tube before, so I'm glad we went and got to have the experience. The tour guide talked really slow and was long-winded with silly fictional stories. I enjoyed hearing the facts and would enjoy a bit of whimsy, but the fictional stories were really long and boring.
