This place was listed in a tourist brochure, so we thought we would visit to see what it was. We were surprised to see that it is a very interesting historical site. We only could watch the outdoor exhibits, as the museum was closed. The place is beautifully situated in the landscape, and gives you the feeling of the history... More

The museum is hidden underground as not to spoil the wonderful scenery in this area. You enter through a 'well' that represents Mimirs well, famous in Norse mythology. The museum is really interesting and with the audio headset, you can take your time and go through each part at your own pace and repeat any parts you wish. Lots of... More

We have found this centre to have so much potential but were a bit disappointed on the following aspects: 1) Signage when you arrive at this place was poor and should be improved as the cultural centre is underground and hidden so we sent sometime trying to work out if this place was open as we are arrived early 10:30am.... An amazing outdoors museum / functional Viking farm, at beautiful Bukkøy! Start your day at the History Museum where the interactive centre will teach you all you need to know about the first Capital of Norway! Then continue out to Bukkøy (the island) where you can experience how the life of the Vikings were! Try and go when the Viking... More

A lot of musea a kind of "boring" but not this one! History told from a kings point of view. There also is a nice short walk to a reconstructed Viking settlement. Take a walk around the church, there are some nice views.

Great cultural centre here with all the info on this amazing Royal Stronghold. The medieval church with mighty grave mounds, and a short walk to a reconstructed Viking Farm. Enjoy the outdoor activity of the Viking Farm, shoot arrows & experience the Viking way of life. The virgin Mary's Needle standing tall leans only 9.2cm from the church wall and... More

We have taken the short hike through the sheep fields, over the bridges and through the woods to the Viking village and visited in all seasons. Our kids (last trip ages 3&7) love exploring history hands on. This summer several buildings were open with guides and activities. We have also encountered school groups on previous trips. There are picnic areas... More
