About
From the name of the famous family who settled there for nearly a hundred years from 1887, the Habitation Clément is a vast agricultural area of 160 hectares, nestled in the town of Le François, in the South-East of Martinique. Dominated by a Creole house dating back to the 18th century, this site, listed as a historical monument in 1996, is home to a major heritage site, a well-known contemporary art centre and a renowned rum house in the heart of sugar cane plantations.

Parking easy and we enjoyed the visit to the rum factory, house and rum tasting. Go early as we enjoyed a pretty peaceful visit. Lots to purchase in the shop. - ToujoursLaRouteParis, France1,212 contributionsGreat destinationThis place is just amazing. It is a botanical garden, a museum, a historical landmark, a playground for kids, a very rich rhum shop...you will surely find something to do and something to love about it. Do not rush, dedicate at least half day to visit everything, it really worth the experience. And buy a bottle of old rhum...you might find the same at the airport at least 20% more expensive...Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 19, 2024
- retireeVancouverVancouver, Canada1,828 contributionsImpressive grounds and rum tasting worth the entrance feeClement House is an impressive place. Surrounded by acres of sugar and banana plants, Clement House welcomes visitors to first walk along paths through beautiful parklike grounds before coming to the old rum distillery and warehouses for storing rum barrels. Visitors mainly walk around the outside of the old building/distillery viewing pieces of the old equipment used in grinding the sugar cane. It no longer is a functioning distillery - at this location anyway. I liked one display area that had a small section of a sugar cane train that once carried the cane from the field to the distillery. A bed of sugar cane plants was good for close up viewing of the cane, but there was no cane tasting. There are bilingual info signs with brief information about what one is looking at. We didn't have audio sets for the audio information at these stops. We took 30 minutes for this walk, but I would have liked more time to walk through the extended parklike grounds to view the plants and various pieces of sculpture placed throughout. From these outer buildings, the pathway leads to the plantation house. Visitors view a sitting room and a dining room set with good china and glasses on a beautifully polished long dining table. The tropical flower arrangements were lovely to see in the house. The hallway had family photos of the original owner and of Bush's and Mitterrand's meeting at the house. The house visit takes about 5 minutes The visit ends in the very clean and modern rum tasting room and gift shop where bottles of the rum that we tasted could be purchased (12E to 22E). We had 2 strong rum tastings (finger size) in stemware and 1 tasting of a rum and fruit mixture. The rum tasting takes about 10 minutes. I thought the entrance fee (10E) was reasonable. Washrooms are plentiful and clean. There is no food available for purchase, but one can enjoy one's own picnic at picnic tables in the "park". Paths are paved and often have colorful showy tropical foliage plants alongside. Parking is plentiful. The drive from Fort de France across the island to this attraction is 30 minutes and the paved roads are well maintained. We visited this attraction on a cruise ship excursion so our time was limited to just over an hour visit. If you want to see harvested sugar cane being shredded, crushed and boiled, this is not the place.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 21, 2024

Fantastic experience and I would recommend this as a must visit if you find yourself in Martinique.
The museum experience is varied and flows nicely from area to area and the grounds were absolutely stunning with their extensive array of trees and sculptures.
The rum tasting is relaxed and extensive and you are welcome to try as many as you wish.
Don’t park when you first arrive as we did down by the industrial area. Continue up the hill along the palm lined entrance road to find the actual car park!

Reserve 4h at least to visit the gardens and the distilery! Must visit if u are in Martinique.
Be warned that the english guide is missing most of the sign explications so better ask for french one if u know some french.
Some sign have explanation in english but most don’t.
The gardens are the highlight of this visit, be sure to explore them.

This is a great half day visit. Some lovely art and sculptures to see in the grounds and a great insight to rhum production. Follow the self guided tour with an audio guide and maps. There was also another art exhibition to see. The old style colonial house was very well preserved.

The Habitation Clement distillery/gift shop/ and gardens was a nice relaxing way to spend part of our day. The grounds are very scenic to walk through, and the old habitation residence buildings and distillery shop were interesting. Rum sampling can be deadly. Make sure you have a dut driver!

I enjoyed that place a lot: mostly the garden, few modern art spots (including indoor museum) and photos in the factory. Very calm and pleasant place to visit. Take some cold water with you and a book - in the park it is just a great place for it

We spent about four hours slowly wondering around Habitation Clement. The admission charge was 12 Euros per person: we were provided with a headset with an English translation and a map. The habitation comprises (1) an old distillery with industrial equipment used in the production of rum. The equipment has been restored and there are notices explaining the distillation process; (2) the grounds which have been reclaimed and turned into a botanical garden with a wide variety of tropical plants. There are benches located around the garden where you have a picnic or just sit and admire the trees and bushes; (3) storehouses, which contain countless barrels of maturing rum; and (4) a number of restored buildings including the house where the Clement family lived, kitchen and stables. You exit through a shop where you can sample and buy a range of rum drinks at competitive prices. If you are thinking of going to Martinique then put this distillery on your list of places to visit.

I do not like rum. I am usually a wine-person. Hello! Married to a Frenchi! However, I made an exception here and had some rum – rum in Martinique is just the real deal. The Clement house is a restored rum distillery and sugar plantation. How they restored the grounds and the old Creole house is just astounding. All the painting on the walls, the porcelain and silver and in every room of course one glass of rum poured on display. I love books and this house was full of them and old telephones and typewriters. Everything in excellent conditions which gives you a great idea how life was back then in a sugar plantation. We did the audio guided tour and all thought it was truly amazing. Rum tasting at the end

In some places we have visited we have been able to get a cab or mini bus at the cruise port and for 10- 15 dollars per person have been given almost the exact same tour that you can prebook on the cruise for tons more. Is this kind of thing possible here in Martinique or should we just book the all around tour so we can see everything we want to and be sure about it?
Written February 24, 2019
Sure. Martinique is pretty small. We try to avoid organised tours anyway... :)
