We were staying at a little hotel just down the block. Unfortunately we got there in the late afternoon and left in the morning so we did not have much time in Castello d'Empuries. That evening the church was closed and in the morning it was rather dark but typical of Spanish churches rather impressive. I wish I had more... More

We cycled through and enjoyed popping in. Situated in an impressive old village, had a delicious tomato salad on the square.

Quite a surprising find in the middle of Castello. The Basilica is massive, a truly amazing piece of architecture. Well worth taking the time to take in all the different angles and different parts of the building. My children were in awe of the place.

Church of Santa Maria or Cathedral of Emporda- is one of few gothic churches located in a rural area. Simply stunning in its architecture. When you first walk through the doors its seems rather dark and cold, however as you walk towards the beautifully detailed altar, lights automatically switch on, highlighting specific areas along your path. The church is free... More

Dominating the charming and atmospheric town of Castello d'Empuries, the Basilica speaks of a time when religion and politics were closely intertwined, and the local Counts were hugely ambitious. Architecturally interesting, wide a huge and wide nave, containing the tombs of several local rulers and various side chapels, this is a must see. The Basilica also contains a small (... More

A real gem, not much gold and gilt. But a truer reflection of religion. Castello obviously looses out to Figueres.

The whole village is worth to visit and the Santa Maria is worth, too. The entrance is free but if you want to have a closer look at the old altar and the small Exhibition you have to pay 2 Euro per Person. Quite OK.

Magnificent Cathedral in the ancient capital of the Counts of Empuries. Built in the thirteenth century, in Gothic style, has endured wars, Tramontanas and the passage of time to the present day in magnificent condition. Highlights include an interesting altar with alabaster altarpiece, its museum, its organ and a baptism font of one piece of the fifteenth century Right behind... More
