Another example showcasing the richness of flora able to thrive on the Azores. Offers a pleasant stroll and ability to explore collections such as the native Azorean garden and valley of ferns.

We spent about two hours here going on a beautiful hike among flowers and amazing vegetation. The old church was beautiful and well worth the stop

Loved this stunning chapel sitting lake side with magnificent steeples and rock work. Wished we could have gone inside but it wasn't open when we were there.

We were staying in Furnas and visited here one morning. Parking is in a lot across from the southern edge of the lake (cheap). It’s 3 euro to enter the garden , well worth it.

You’ll be able to peak inside the small chapel, then take a beautiful easy hike, passing by a massive sequoia tree, ending with an enormous waterfall. I didn’t measure any of the waterfalls we saw, but I would have to say that this was easily the highest one. It’s a very pleasant walk there and back. There are other areas to explore, we saw a bit more, but did not see everything. There are some areas for flower gardens, but they weren’t in bloom in October.

I highly recommend a visit and would return here myself, especially if the flowers were in bloom!

The surprise of our stay in Furnas was a walk to the church on the lake. To see it you need to pay 3 euros to a very bored guy to enter the park. He hands you a bad map with no explanation (he doesn't speak english) BUT WHAT A GEM! There is a fern forest, a sequoia tree from California (ok we see them all the time at home, but this was a surprise) and a 2 mile (one way) hike to a very nice waterfall that is maybe 60-80 feet high.

We spent a couple of hours and had a great day - but bring water, good shoes and some snacks. There are signs to the waterfall (it is very well marked), they just don't tell you its a 2 mile hike and many people were wearing flip flops! Bring good shoes as its mostly flat, but lots of roots and some uneven footing.

We had great weather - it sprinkled slightly was overcast, but never rained. Even if it did rain, most of the walk is covered by trees so it wouldn't be a bad hike.

This was a welcome break from driving. The lake was nice and you can walk around most of it. For 3E you can enter the botanical garden. They say a leisurely half hour walk to the waterfall, but we are in good shape and it took that long. The trail gets a little treacherous when you hit the forests, lots of exposed tree roots and rocks, stairs that are not for the impaired and railings that are unstable. The waterfall was not big, but worth the trip. A must.

Very nice, relaxing walk around the lake is suitable for all ages and health conditions. There is also a small hidden bamboo forest.

If you need a rejuvenating forest-bathing experience, you couldn't go wrong in spending a few euros to visit the lovely Mata-Jardim Jose do Canto. Don't miss the spectacular sequoia and waterfall!

I was mesmerized by the Capella da Nossa Senhora das Vitorias when I saw it from across the lake when visiting Furnas in July 2018. It has a very interesting history dating back to when it was built in the 1800s. I had the opportunity to connect with the family and tour the inside. The architecture is amazing and the stained glass windows are extraordinary. To think about how old this building is really makes you appreciate the craftsmanship of that time. This is a funerary chapel and Jose do Canto and his wife are both buried there.

After touring the Capella we walked down to the waterfall. It was very beautiful as we had gotten lots of rain. It is my understanding the waterfall is dry during the summer. It is a pretty easy walk and there is much to see. Some areas are quite overgrown but if you understand this is not a manicured garden like others you might see in Sao Miguel you’ll be able to appreciate the beauty in it all.

It’s the perfect place for a hike, long walk and picnic. The family was so nice to meet and very welcoming.
