The monastery is made up of two different churches in style and a monastic ensemble. I recommend you go with a guide because there are many stories to hear.

There are three famous and large monasteries in Bulgaria and all of them stauropegic, meaning that they were subordinated directly to the patriarch in Constantinople - at least in the beginning. The biggest and most beautiful to look at is the monastery of Rila, followed...More

The building itself is beautiful from an angle but all together it's not so special. Make sure to stop at Eden's Fortress, it's much more beautiful and right on the road to the monastery!

Worth visiting when you're passing by. There's 2 leva parking fee. What I was really happy with is that there are a lot of food stalls on the way to the monastery. You can buy a lot of cheap, but great quality home-made products :).

This large monastery has a scenic location and is impressive in its own right. Moreover, the church is spectacular, both inside and out. The frescos are perfect!

We arrived on a busy Saturday with a wedding and several baptisms going on so you might want to go mid-week when it might be a tad less crowded. Lovely interiors....take a walk around to the side of the monastery for some away from the...More

The exterior is average but you must go inside to see the paintings. You can take photographs. We stop here since we were on our way from Devin to Plovdiv and this place is right off the road.
