During our private tour to Vienna woods, we have visited this beautiful abbey. It was a Cistercian monastry founded in 1113 and the medieval architectural designs thereat together with the many stained glass windows therein were breath-taking. The place was quiet and we also have the time to visit a small session of the internal part as well as the... More

We visited the abbey on a Gray Line tour (which we had to do, as it is difficult to reach on public transportation. But that did not really matter; it was a small tour with an excellent guide. As this is still a functioning Cistercian abbey, we could only visit the church and the cloisters and the chapter house. It... More

This is a Medieval Abby founded in 1113. It is a Cistercian monastery in the village of Heilingenkreuz in the southern part of the Vienna woods. It is the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world. Very impressive.

An obligatory stop in a Vienna Wood trip - really interesting and beautiful place. Ancient abbey is still breathing with the medieval air. Must see.

I visited here as part of an organised day tour from Vienna and it was wonderful. The detail in the architecture and stained glass windows was fabulous. We spent about an hour here and I'd absolutely recommend it if you appreciate art and architecture.

We visited the abbey as part of our excursion to the Vienna Woods. We had a 30 minute guided tour of the Abbey. Our guide told us a lot about the history of the Abbey, and guided us along a hallway overlooking a courtyard. There were many small chapels and a lecture room along the way. The church was very... While driving in and around the Wiener Wald - Vienna Woods - south of Vienna, there are some stops you mustn’t miss. The Abbey at Heiligenkreuz is one. Not necessarily for the tour (in German and guided-only), but for the food in the rambling restaurant that serves monks, priests, nuns and tourists alike. Hearty but tasty local fare, including asparagus... More

Fun facts about this place? It was built in 1133 and is the oldest (continuously) active monastery in the world. Like many of the similar sites I've visited, they use part of the grounds as a school which really livens up the place. Now the monks are just responsible for teaching, but in the past they did ALL the construction,... More

This was a highlight of our trip to Vienna. One of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in Europe. Great tour and chance to attend vespers in the chapel. Fascinating.
