What a great initiative! The owner welcomes you with a bright smile, almost sorry you can't taste at 10 in the morning;)
The idea is to purchase a card and pay what you try. We listen to his recommandations but had an idea of what we wanted. The choice is large and prices good

A great way to wine taste.

We tried the Caveau in Mercurey as it seemed to be the best way of trying different producers wine. It operates as a market place type outlet and we were able to taste wines from a number of local growers. The procedure was easy to grasp with the help of the English speaking .gentleman in charge, and for 10 euros, we tried 7 or 8 different wines. And we did end up buying one for my next special birthday, so I will remember Mercurey.

Good overview of Mercurey wines

Initially we wanted to visit a winery in Mercurey to taste and buy some wines, but then we came along this place. We had a warm welcome. They have about 50 wines, white and red, of the Mercurey appellation to taste. You buy a card of let's say 10€ and they give you a tasting glass. You insert your card, select the wine you would like to taste and your glass gets filled with the requested quantity.
Disadvantage of this system is that you have to pay to taste wines. This is not the case if you go to a winery. But the BIG advantage is that you can taste a lot of wines from different wineries without feeling any obligation to buy anything. And believe me, even in a rather small appellation as Mercurey the styles of the wines from the differ very much from winery to winery. The person that attends the reception knows a lot of the wines and can guide you to the wine/style you prefer.
Wines are sold at the same price as at the winery.
