I went to Kamikochi, the crown jewel of the Japanese Alps. The scenic area is a basin at an elevation of 1500 metres. The Alps rise an additional 1500 metres from there, creating a stunningly gorgeous background. It is probably one of the most spectacular views I have seen.

My wife's first camping trip was here to Kamikochi. Although the campground was very crowded this is no doubt one of the best places for outdoor recreation. We woke up in the morning and the monkeys were in the trees right above the tent!

Achingly beautiful place to walk through for an afternoon. Formed from a volcanic mud flow I believe and due to the policy of asking tourists to take their rubbish home with them, it's wonderfully clean. Great if you want to relax and soak in a bit of fresh air and nature.

The paths are easy to follow and you can walk for many hours to see the different lakes - tashiro ike, taisho ike and myojin ike. Immerse yourself in nature and take a moment to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It was very cold when I visited in October so please dress up. If you are feeling fit, there are some... More

Visited Kamikochi as a day trip from Takayama. Had a great day. The walking tracks are amazing. Scenery is surreal. Would loved to have spend a couple of days here walking the various tracks.

We started our day trip by bus from Hirayu Bus Terminal, the return bus fare is 2050 yen and it is valid for 2 days. We got off the bus at Taisho-ike Bus Stop, one stop before the Kamikochi bus Terminal. The crystal clear blue water of Taisho Pond forming the scenic mirror-like reflections of Mt. Yakedate. We passed by... More

Kamikochi area don't allow private car. Hence, you need to park your car near Sawando bus station and take a bus or taxi there (30 mins ride). There's 4 of us and hence is slightly cheaper to take the cab. One way to Kamikochi is 4,200 yen for taxi vs 1,250 per pax for bus. Our taxi driver offered us... More

Kamikochi itself has around 5 or 6 hotels and a tourist information point. It is a good set-off and end point for hiking in the area but is probably not worth more than a one night stay.

Kamikochi offers a lot of hikes that can suit every type of traveler, there are trails that are very easy and beautiful and trails that go up the mountain and suit more experienced hikers. There were a lot of resting places along the way.

This place was discovered by Rev. Walter Weston and admired by many Japanese. You have to use public transport to visit this area.Minimum stay is one night and to explore the whole areas need 3-4 nights. You can rent some utensils at Konashidaira camp site and stay in small bungalows or in your tent.
