The palace was destroyed in WWII and is shut off from the public entering. However, the exterior has been rebuilt to the exact specifications of pre war Russia. It is phenomenal. But Peter the Great was more than your average Tsar. He was a builder...More

Magnificent grounds, gorgeous architecture. Impressive and unique. Have traveled a lot, and never seen grounds as beautiful, even the grounds of Versailles (as impressive as they are) don't compare.

A must see. Amazing! The beauty of the island cannot be described in words. Go see it! Peter was a man ahead of his time.

The garden has many fountains, some very high. It runs steadily down to the canal. The house is also good.

It is an hour’s drive from the city. This grand, long and narrow palace has minimal decoration. Architect Rastrelli's main stylistic flourishes are the two white pavilions with gilded cupolas at the end of the wings. Beige and white, the palace is majestic and provides...More

This is one of the most beautiful places we have visited anywhere in Europe. We were fortunate to be here for the turning on of the fountains. The beautiful scene of the fountains coming alive is greatly enhanced by the beautiful music accompaniment. The scenery...More

The palace, grounds and fountains are incredible, sadly so are the crowds. We went with a tour guide so we got in earlier. She negotiated the lengthy line of large tour groups to get us in and through the scrum/melee of coat check, bag check...More

Amazing what one can do with water. I interior was great, but after awhile, there is only so much gold leaf you can take. The grounds are well laid out and a monument design and ingenuity.

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
I and my wife, plan to visit SP in mid-March 2017, not sure what is the weather like? We would like to get there by hydrofoil, and visit the garden first if more time allowed, perhaps we will go inside the palace. Questions: Is the entrance ticket good for both the lower and upper gardens? Are the fountains all operational as usual? Aren't there any discount if we purchase the combined tickets? How is Grand Palace compare with the Catherine Palace which we intent to visit (before or after) Any discount for senior or student?

Yes There are stairs , but they don't get your life difficult. Children were not tired by that. Of course elderly people may face some difficulties
So two questions I understand having to pay for the hydrofoil to get to the palace but once you arrive must you pay to get on the grounds? Second question what is the price/ prices to enter the different parts of the castle (how many different components are their) PS - their website is quite confusing

Paying for the hydrofoil only gets you the hydrofoil ride---yes, you still have to pay for everything else. We were there in May 2016. When we bought our hydrofoil ticket we HAD to purchase a return. We guessed how long we... More
