A Morning with the Elephants at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

47 reviews
Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is the first and only ethical elephant sanctuary in Phuket where elephants roam around, bathe and sozialize freely across 30 acres of lush, tropical land bordering the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park in North East Phuket. We buy all rescued elephants to ensure that Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is their final home, and we offer professional veterinary care for old and injured elephants. By visiting us, you are supporting a sustainable, ethical and compassionate approach to elephant tourism where elephants have the freedom to live naturally. National Geographic, Lonely Planet and The Guardian have all endorsed our ethical approach.

The markets open Tuesday’s and Friday’s. As the Thai saying goes, the markets have much of the same same but different. Local cuisine cooked before your eyes. Absolutely amazing. Just remember, you get what you pay for!!! The locals don’t mind a bit of bartering, but don’t be disrespectful!!! Some of the tourists that I’ve seen engaging in bartering have been rude and arrogant. The Thai locals deserve far greater respect than that!! The Temple itself is just breathtaking. It’s architecture in all its glory is just astonishing. Enjoy the market but more importantly, appreciate the Thai culture.

Friday evening 14h February and we visited this market for the second time. It is situated in the grounds of the Karon Temple. On this occasion we were here to visit the Temple. The Market and Temple are situated along Patak Road, which is full of bars, restaurants and shops. A lively place to walk along on the way to the Market or have dinner after being to the Market. There were a large number of stalls/kiosks selling the usual tourist stuff and it appeared to be more expensive that other places. There were also some funfair stalls, nothing too exciting, dotted about the Market A number of stalls/kiosks were preparing and cooking street food Worth a browse, but nothing special.

This is a night market that is supposed to be only open twice a week. While we were in Karon it was open most nights. All the usual stuff on sale with nothing special except if you want to try fried insets.

I visited the market while on a trip with five other family members. From an eleven year old to 50+. It was quite a way out of town from Kata where we were staying but worth the visit. There are some lovely temple buildings with lots of locals and local activities. There was a stage with dancing groups including a local school performing with lovely Thai music. The market stalls themselves were selling the same things you find everywhere else, fake goods, beach wear, souvenirs etc but there are lots of stalls to choose from. There are quite a lot of food and drink options all selling nice Thai food lots of which is made while you watch. Lovely fresh fruit smoothies too at very reasonable prices. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Unlike some Thai night markets there is no alcohol allowed at the temple market. There are plenty of other shops and restaurants in the area too.
