Overview
More
The world's first Unzoo project is located at Taranna, Tasmania, about one hour from Hobart and 10kms before Port Arthur. The Unzoo is an innovative and holistic wildlife experience dedicated to showing you the unique animals and plants of Tasmania while taking a lead role in preserving the critically endangered Tasmanian devil. Join our guided wildlife encounters and come face to face with our famous devils and endemic quolls, pademelons, rosellas, kangaroos, possums, frogmouths and birds of prey. More than two km of trails take you through the Tasmanian Native Botanic Garden from tall tree forest to the Norfolk Bay seaside. The principle of the Unzoo is to immerse you in our natural environment so, for instance, we have removed our boundary fences so the local wild animals can come and go as they please. Allow two hours for your visit or add an hour for a 4WD research and conservation adventure to see how we are managing the last safe wild Tasmanian devils on Earth. The Unzoo is open every day (except 25 Dec) from 9am. We schedule our wildlife encounters each half hour or so, that's 15 every day.

Totally enjoyed the trip to the unzoo. It's about 70min drive away from Hobart but totally worried the drive. It's a small enclosure but has most of the essential animals endemic to Tasmania. Love the devils and especially the kangaroo feedings. We also went on...More

Although there is a large sign on the road, the buildings don't scream out Wildlife Conservation Centre. The grounds are more than a little run down but the focus of the staff is on the wildlife and their welfare. You can use the map provided...More

We were advised that this place was a must see, and we weren't disappointed. Saw 2 of their presentations - Tasmanian Devil and Birds of the Bush - and both were well presented and informative. The presenters were knowledgable and entertaining and we came away...More

The 10 year old grandson & his grandparents has a great few hours at the unzoo. Staff friendly and informative. Would visit it again when near Port Arthur.

Stopped here before I did a Tasman Island Cruise in the afternoon. The enclosures are spacious and well vegetated. The animals had plenty of room to fun, hide, play and socialize. Would've stayed longer but ran out of time. Well worth the visit if you're...More

My friend and I just came across the Unzoo so decided to pop in. It was a very relaxed enjoyable visit. We were able to see Tasmanian devils as well as walk amongst and pet kangaroos and wallabies. They had a number of different birds...More

This reserve has healthy Tasmanian Devils, Spotted Quolls, indigenous parrots and other attractions. You can see the animals fed several times per day and listen to interesting information from the rangers. Although the entry fee is fairly high for an attraction of this type, the...More

LOVE THIS ZOO - they're helping to save the Tasmanian Devil population as they have disease free devils that are thriving! They have several shows a day where they feed some devils and explain their feeding habits and other interesting things about this amazing marsupial....More

Thank you for your great response. We are very happy you enjoyed learning about our work with Tasmanian devil conservation. As we have mentioned before perhaps we need to explain our Unzoo concept a deal better as we have made a change from a zoo...More

Thank you for supporting us. Perhaps our message that we now do not have a zoo but an Unzoo, which is greatly different from a zoo, is not being explained well enough. This is a bit of a challenge as we are the first to...More

What a great response from an Aussie. It is wonderful to read that you enjoyed your visit to see our Australian / Tasmanian fauna. The main thing about our Unzoo is that most of the animals you experience here are wild. Regards, John Hamilton.

No, it is just like a regular Zoo. You can turn up and just stroll through. I do recommend going in the afternoon as they seemed to be when the feeding of animals occurred and when the birdshot was on. As for price, we had a... More
