This compound is very massive. The number of buildings, houses, temples, gardens, and schools are impressive. The designs, decorations, carvings, statues, etc. Feng Shui style built. Various entries via three gates in the compound. It was founded by Wang Shi, the tofu maker of China.

This "family" compound was for the ruling clan of the province. The courtyard community consists of 3 large groups of courtyard homes that look like 3 castles on a hillside, connected by bridges across ravines. I've been to many places in China. Wang is definitely a must see.

We went to the Wang family Compound not really appreciating what it was we were about to see and came away absolutely spellbound by the sheer beauty and scale of this residence. Personally, I found it the finest example of classical Chinese architecture that we had seen. And even though it is a massive complex, there is a surprising intimacy to it. This remains an absolute highlight of our month in China and I could almost see me going back to China, just to take in more of this wondrous place. it is that good.

Absolutely stunning place - beautiful. It is definitely worth seeing if you like Chinese architecture/interior design etc... Not even comparable to seeing the Qiao's Family compound which I assume is only more visited because it is closer and famous after being used in the Raise the Red Lantern film. Really worth visiting and we were very surprised that we had read to see either the Wang or Qiao residences, not both, as the Wang residence is amazing.

this is the largest private family compound in China. in my opinion it is far grander and more interesting then Hearst's Castle in California. The current attraction cover only 1/5 of the original size, but there are more then enough for you to gawk at and enjoy. Every little piece of decoration has its hidden meaning meant to educate of inspire family members, every building is an excellent example of Shanxi residential construction. It is well worth the trip to just have a look at many of the houses and the castle walls that protects the family compound.
note: hiring a car for the day to take you to Wang Family's Compound should cost no more then 250RMB for the trip, or 330RMB if you make it a whole day trip by adding other attractions such as the ZhangBi fortress and Shuanglin Temple. Don't get hoodwinked.

we combined the trip with Zhanbi Ancient Castle. Wang´s family compound seem like the small brother of the forbidden city, even its way younger. Equipped with a audio guide and a map we explored the compound. Its a huge areal with building, but similar to also forbidden city all of them are closed. Nevertheless it was worth the trip.

Another well preserved family courtyard to visit in Jinsheng, almost all similar to me. But having heard this one was the biggest among the rest in Shanxi. You must visit the small local village outside this Wang's Compound.

Amazing complex displaying the wealth of this Wang family. It looks like a small walled city, but it's just their family residence and extended family... and great grand children's residence! Huge place.
Sculptures everywhere which is a sign of wealth.
Had lunch at a small restaurant near the entrance by the parking lot. Run by a family. Good food. And vegetarian friendly with several options.

I wish tripadvisor allowed reviewers to give 1/2 scores. This place is a 3.5 star attraction. Slightly better than Pingyao, but after a few courtyards, everything starts to look the same. My wife and I had to pay 400 yuan round trip for our own personal driver for the day whom we had organized when searching for guides of Pingyao. Expensive by Chinese standards and a bit pricey given the quality of Wang Compound and Zhongbi fortress. We were able to find areas of peace and quiet which made it possible to envision what it might have been like to live in the compound. Worth a trip if you're in Pingyao, but not worth going out of your way to plan when vacationing in China.
