It is good to view for forest only, we could not find any animal. If you are not keen to view forest then do not spend your time and money to visit this place.

Koyna WLS in the Sahayadri Range is a one of the top hotspots for bio-diversity, wildlife and mesmerizing landscape. At a distance of 300+ Kms ffrom Mumbai, it is an excellent weekend destination for nature lovers. There are many budget hotels at Koyna, so getting a place to stay is not a problem. There are frequent bus service to nearby locations such as Kolhapur, Pune etc..

Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is situated within a dense, green forest in the Satara district of Maharashtra. The protected forest area was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1985 by the government of India. This Wildlife Sanctuary has abundant water flow and rich vegetation which is just the right environment for animals to survive in. The monsoon months between June and August are ideal for tourists to venture into the forests as the temperature is average and climatic conditions are stable. During the rainy season you can enjoy the massive Ozarde Waterfalls within the Wildlife Sanctuary. Surrounded by thick forests, it is an ideal destination for a day-long picnic. To reach the Ozarde waterfall and see the waterfall from a close distance, you have to walk good three kms and climb through mountain slopes. The massive water flow is very impressive, and climb through mountain slopes to see the water fall from a close distance, is very enticing and worth the trouble.

Koyna remains a preferred weekend destination for us as we enjoy the nature and its significantly high green cover making the place more enchanting. We drove from Mumbai for about 6 hours or so to reach the lake area and MTDC accommodation . There are many places (Forest Escape, Wind Chalet, Presidency, Gursale, homestays, River Inn, etc.) where you can stay comfortably in the green surrounding. The chirping of birds make your morning, day and evening special with least level of pollution. We had contacted earlier our Birding partners in the area (Sagar Jadhav - +919623461080) and (Kshitij Kamble - +918275360230) who will guide us inside the forest area during Morning, Day and late evening for locating various interesting species.
On first day after our late lunch, we explored the nearby hilly tracks but later in the evening got our night guide (Abhishek - +919604142905) to take us to the hilltop and move inside core area for tracking Indian Gaur and leopards as well as nightjars, grey rabbits and owls. The trip lasted for about 2.5 hours (he still wanted to go further but it was already 11.30PM and we wanted to turn back). Abhishek stays close to MTDC property and is very decent and extremely helpful guy just like the most humble guys like our friends forever Sagar and Kshitij of the area. We could see a leopard (could not take the snap) as it moved away faster, rabbits, owls, nightjars, etc. We had to park our car in a place at the hilltop area and then walk inside the forest to reach the waterbody where you need to see the animals.
The second day morning started early with continuous chirping of birds of various types (jungle myna, purple sunbird, bulbuls (red vented and red whiskers), Indian robin, Indian rollers, kites, parakeets, etc. After having tea we drove out for birding and meet Sagar and Kshitij for our morning birding program. We moved around various places in the area to see Indian grey hornbill, Malabar starling (Sagar and Kshitij said that they saw last time in March 2021 with us when we visited Koyna for birding and seeing the bird second time with us once again in March 2023, Rufous babbler, leaf birds, Sun birds, Jungle Myna, barbets, Treepies, shikra, Indian blackbird, Golden fronted leafbird, verditer flycatcher, long tail shrike, etc. The birding program, lasted for about 2 hours and came back to hotel for breakfast to visit in the afternoon for the paradise flycatchers.
In the night we again visited a different area (the road going towards Chiplun via Koyna Nehru garden and waterfall) and our target was to see various types of nightjars and owls. We got grey nightjar as well as Jordon nightjar (with egg). We spotted Oriental scops Owl. The night trip lasted for about 2 hours and came back satisfied. We also noticed wild boars as well as multiple rabbits on our way.
Kshitij and Sagar are now grouped together to protect the environment as well as protect the bird species by educating young people and the local population. They run a group "Discover Koyna" and help out travelers in all their need with trekking. They also help out many in the area as well as people living downstream with the information about water release from the dams in case local villagers call them us for information. We had a great trip at Koyna. Looking forward to visit again.

Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is a very underrated and unknown region. Which is good and bad. Good in the sense not many people go there. Bad because the Government does not take care of it. We need to jointly won this and ensure we preserve the wonderful sanctuary !!

Hi Suhas, not sure if it is too late, just had a trip there a few days back. There's a Tata Sumo based safari that we had gone with along with the guide. Although not many animals that we could spot except hare and python, we did get a wide variety of birds during our trek in the forest.

is there any option for jungle safari ? also help me knowing if there is jungle resort to stay for two days ?
Written December 26, 2017
No there are no Jungle Resorts at Koyna WLS. Tent accommodation is available.
It is quite easy to hire a local vehicle and go in. You can speak with Raj. he is a forest guide and very helpful too. His number is +91 8889 0948. He can organize a Jeep for you. You will need a forest guide, its much better, safer and value for money. We had engaged Raj for almost two full days, day one in the forest buffer area ... manly walk. day 2 in the forest core area .. by jeep & walk. The total cost was well under Rs 4K (including jeep with driver).
