What a lovely place! Just off the main road E75 near Sisi, a really beautiful and peaceful place - well worth stopping. It doesn't take long to look around, and it's free!

A peaceful monastery in the main road between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos (close to Neopoli village).
Even if Monastery is in the main road (highway) is like is coming out of the mountain within the rocks (nice architecture).
Is not a big monastery but is very beautiful and famous in Crete. We made a pit stop to our way for Heraklion.

The monastery location is beautiful, and on the main road to Hheraklion. The gates are open for everyone and there is no entrance fee. The area you can visit is very small. You can walk in the small yard, and probably you will not see any of the monks. No info is available. You can buy though a souvenir from the shop at the gate.
Outside the gate is a great place where you can eat a cheap and very large Souvlaki, :)

Firstly let me start by saying I think you need to have a car to visit here, it is on the main Crete road between Hersonissos and Agios Nikolaos.
The grounds and buildings are very nice indeed and it is a little oasis of calm and beauty, the views across the road and into the Selinari gorge are quite splendid, there is also a small church in the grounds with wonderful ceiling paintings, people leave silver foil prayers here, which are bought from the site shop.
Well worth a visit if you can get here.

Set in the side of the mountain about 15 minutes drive outside of Malia on the New Road to Agios Nikolas this is a lovely stop. There is also a bus stop directly outside so think the Agios Nikolas bus will stop here as well but you might want to double check that with the driver. I stopped on a Sunday morning and was fortunate to see the end of a christening service here. I remained outside the main church during this as didn't wan't to intrude but the loud speakers in the courtyard meant I could hear the lovely peaceful chants of the monks. Both churches have some lovely fresco paintings and the monks were friendly and dressed in traditional black robes. Worth a stop if your passing. There is a couple of shops on the road beside the entry to the monastery where you can buy a drink or something to eat and a public toilet.

It is a very beautiful place next to the highway from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaus. From there you can see beautiful views of the coast. The place has lovely gardens and buildings are made of beautiful architecture. It is a perfect place to relax and to meditate. There is a souvenir shop on site and next to the entrance there is a place where you can eat. The entrance to the site is free, although the area available for visitors is very small, but worth stopping for a while in this place.

We were staying in Sissi in April and visited the monastery on a Sunday morning having hired a car. At that time, out of season it was very peaceful, and set in a gorge the scenery is great. Thamain attraction for me however were the Griffon Vultures flying over the gorge. I had read that they might live in the gorge but had not expected to see one. However at that time there were up to 6 of thesed huge birds flying over the gorge. Although we did not revisit the monastery we went near the gorge on two other occasions during the holiday and saw at least one vulture on both occasions. (The main road runs along the bottom of the gorge).

Great atmospheric site. Not overcrowded with tourists. Beautiful location. Big on a wired confluence of religion and nationalism born of fighting the Turks. Reminds me of the Alamo without the hideous American Commercialisation
