Overview
More
Just 20 minutes from Saumur, the Chevalerie de Sace is a medieval archaeological site where the ruins of an old fortified manor house can be admired. It belonged to Jehan Godin de Sace, a local lord whose power was closely linked to the noble families of Anjou and to the senechalsy of Saumur. Excavations held by the A.R.E.G.H.A.T. organization revealed some 15 000 painted and varnished tiles dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Since 1981 the artifacts discovered during the various archaeological campaigns are showcased in the Museum of History and Archaeology of Brain-sur-Allonnes. In 1990 the organization created a medieval botanical garden adjoining the archaeological site. As of today over 800 species of plants cultivated in the Middle Ages are conserved here.

I am so sad to see negative reviews of this place when it is so lovingly and painstakingly run by volunteers. We were lucky enough to attend the 33rd medieval and it was absolutely wonderful for our 5 yo. Lots of games and things to...More

We stumbled across this place while walking in the woods trying to tire out a toddler. The signs say €1 entry, but it's actually €6 per adult. The lady we paid was lovely; but they had also run out of english leaflets. The medieval gardens...More

This herb garden is well laid out and the beds clearly identified in groups depending on medicinal use. It is in an interesting setting with some remains of an old chateau. There are tableaux with models of herb users--witches; cloth dyers; alchemists etc. Having said...More
