The Romans were down in the valley. People moved to the hill towns for safety after the fall of the Empire in the Middle Ages. The presence of the Abbaye in the Valley indicates the return of safety (under the Holy Roman Empire and early...More

A starkly simple Cistercian abbey that is just beautiful. The setting is peaceful and the abbey blends into the countryside. Inside you see the outstanding stonework and marvellous proportions of the construction done during the 12C! The Cistercian order of St Benedict adhered to the...More

Very quiet place (we were here in high season around lunch time, only 6-7 other people around) that respires atmosphere of an antique, religeous place.

One of three Cistercian abbeys in Provence, this abbey is a structure which provides an example of an architecture in whose beauty is defined by its simplicity and starkness. The church was constructed in Romanesque style between 1175 and 1220, during the time when great...More

One of the region's 3 most famous cistercian abbeys. Personally I prefer Senanque and Thoronet, but Silvacane is another example of the simplistic beauty of these austere monumental buildings. Each one instils calm, peace and tranquility and one doesn't have to be religious to appreciate...More

La Roque d'Anthéron is famous for its music recitals held in the beautiful, austere and tranquil Cistercian Abbaye de Silvacane which has however some modern art. The town itself, on a grid pattern, has a particularly atmospheric square where the former Mairie will be found....More

Hi ! sorry, I was in Montreal, Quebec, so I haven't seen your question before. You must go first to "La Roque d'Anthéron" on bus from Aix and there, the abbaye is at 3 minutes by walking. Enjoy your travel !
