The Nlak’pamux Church, also known as St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, has always served as a sort of landmark for me. Ever since we started doing our roadtrips across the Province, this little church – with its hints of Gothic architecture and green shingles – always caught my attention and signified that we had a mere 2 hours left in our journey. Ironically, despite its role as a personal landmark, I only took the time to stop and observe this wonderful little church this year – over 30 years after the roadtrips started!

Unfortunately, information on the church is pretty scant; however, what I was able to find proved to be rather interesting. In short, the Nlak’pamux Church was built between 1905 and 1907 to replace another church that was destroyed in the “Great Landslide of Spences Bridge,” which killed 18 people, including the visiting Chief Lillooet. In this sense, I’d argue the church – beyond being a heritage structure – is deeply ingrained within the historic and cultural fabric of the community.

As of this writing, the church is closed, and looks like it’s been that way for quite some time. Still, it makes for a nice – albeit quick – photo stop!
