About
The Alishan Mountain Range is one of the five largest mountain ranges in Taiwan. However, “Alishan,” which means “Ali Mountain,” is in fact not a single mountain, but rather refers to the entire mountain range. The area has been home to a rich stock of Taiwan red cypresses and Taiwan yellow cedars since ancient times. From 1912 until the late 1960s this was the site of the largest forestry center in all of Taiwan. The Giant Trees Plank Trail within the recreation area currently has two sections. Walking along the trail, you’ll encounter 36 red cypress giant trees that have survived through the centuries, reminders of the magnificence of these sacred trees.

    Great day out.
The visitor info counter at TRA Chiayi station can provide you with all your timetable info for trains and buses. I took the bus from out front of TRA Chiayi station. Suggest you get there at least 30 minutes early as you have to line up. If the bus is full before your turn you will have to wait for the next bus. I visited on a weekday. I'd imagine weekends are packed with visitors. I used my easycard and when we arrived at Alishan Transport Station the bus driver will give you a coupon which will entitle you to a 50% discount on the park entry fee. A saving of TWD$150. There is a 7-11 at the bus station. I took the train to Chaoping station (TWD$100) and from my research decided to followed the Sister Ponds Trail. Quite enjoyable with a temple with surrounding food shops, cypress trees, tree forest scenery. I walked until I reached Schumen station where I took the train (TWD$100) back to Alishan. It is very cool up there so I would strongly suggest shies and socks and a jacket. I returned by bus although I had wanted to take the bus to Shitzulu and then the train but the last train departs at 1.10pm which was too early for me. There are a couple of hotels there if that interests you but by far most visitors are daytrippers.

Well worth visiting -- quite unique.
This area is quite an excursion -- a long drive and expensive to stay in. But the forests are extraordinary. Great hiking trails, some beautiful old trees. Great views if you are lucky with the weather. It is managed by the indigenous community whose land it is on but their organization is pretty slick. The early morning train ride to see the sun rise over Jade Peak is memorable, especially if it is clear.

If you can survive the drive up, it's well worth it.
We will start with the bad, the drive up is rough. We went with a tour bus and it was two hours of sharp turns, windiness and very slow driving. We thought the driver was joking when he handed our barf bags to everyone, but the joke was on us, as half the bus started barfing on the way up. But once you made it up the mountain. Explicit beauty! One of the most beautiful places I've been, and I've been to places. The cypress forest was great and the artistic arrangement told the story of the place. Very magical. Also appreciated that the displays were in English as well as Chinese. We took a train ride and then hiked the trails. I think the train ride is kind of a waste of money, just hike up the path where the train goes (it's adjacent) and you get better views and the hike is not to bad. Make sure you bring a jacket cause it can get kind of chilly in the higher elevation. For food, there are tons of places to eat up there, from expensive restaurants to convenient store food to Seven. Up to you. We only stayed one day, but I wish we stayed for two. That was my only regret.

in my experience, its better to use the forest train to go there..its more comfortable and cant feel dizziness and u can enjoy the view more.if u want to watch the sunrise, better avail the hotel in the alishan already..the sacred tree station for me its the best breathtaking view,so be sure to spend more time there..and dont forget to view the sunset and sea of clouds in the ciyun temple..the trail is long so prepare water and umbrella. we didnt see the sunrise as it was cloudy that morning.many shops selling breakfast in the sunrise {chushan station}.when we go back to chiayi using the bus..got really dizzy,we were not able to book the forest train because of time issue.

Stunning nature That well preserved. Walking in the forest, high rise trees and early morning sunrise would be something that unforgettable. Riding an antique train climbing up to above 2000mtr hill would be another expensive that wouldn't Miss.

It’s supposedly a must-visit place in ChiaYi county, but I must warn you that to enjoy its entirety the elderly and physically unfit will not be able to do so. Because we had some older folks in our group, we didn’t manage to ascend by foot to higher and deeper areas, also missing a lake or two. However, the vast green flora is quite good backdrops for portrait shots. Admire the gorgeous red cypress trees which were used to make fantastic Chinese furniture seen in many hotel lobbies in Taiwan!

Don’t worry about food - there are many food stalls (food is delicious!) at the recreation stop after walking up from 神木站.

Maybe it’s because I’ve already visited several other national parks elsewhere, I didn’t particularly find anything outstanding or overwhelming for me.

Alishan is a forest area in central Taiwan. Alishan is also known as Mount Ali. Alishan is a temperate area, unlike most of Taiwan, which is sub-tropical. Walking tracks abound. Alishan's "Sea of Clouds" is famous for its rose-colored beauty. You must book in advance to see Alishan's "Sea of Clouds," at dawn. The "Sea of Clouds" is one of the high points of Taiwan.

This year Cherry(Sakura) Blossom season ended on 10 Apr, and I was there one day after, still many people visiting but not as crowded as in the peak. The best is I am still able to capture some nice photos, included sunrise too. Unfortunately unable to see the Sea of clouds.

Alishan is a mountainous area that is one of Taiwan's highlights. "Mount Ali" has been part of Taiwan's mountainous scenery since the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). It was logged for many years. These days, you can take the forest train, which saves walking. By the way, Alishan's best known feature is the "cloud sea" at down, but make sure you book well in advance.

Filled with many restaurants around a car park. Didn’t patronise any of them, except to park our car and buy some essentials from the 7-11.

Sept 2017 • Friends
In October 2017, me and my friends went to Alishan for our first trip in Taiwan with warnings that the weather wasn’t lovely and not friendly to travellers...rain, typhoon and very low temperature in the midst of the mountain.

However, all was set. We planned to see sunrise on top of the mountain at the beginning of the day, then walk along the scenic area, seeing famous spots like Sacred tree (Shenmu), sister ponds and Forest area.

If you wish to see the sunrise at Alishan mountain top, you got to buy tram tickets to take you up there.

Here is the step you need to know...

1. Just 1 day before seeing sunrise, check with the tram station about the sunrise time so you will be able to plan ahead.

2. Don’t need to buy the tram ticket in advance. Instead, buy it at tram station the same day you will see the sunrise. Just make sure that you come in time because the ticket office opens about 3.45am and limited tickets sold at specific time (of course with people ready in line)

3. You need to pay for
- 300 TWD : entrance fee @ Forest Railway Alishan Station.
- 150 TWD : tram ticket

4. Bring jackets. The temperature on the top of mountain is low. Make sure to keep yourself warm.

...... From my experiences, me and friends went through below timeline

2AM : checked out from the hotel
We stayed at Alishan Tea Homestay
which is 45mns. drive from Alishan National Forest Recreation Area.
We rent a van with local driver along the trip so it was easy for transportation.
(You can book a hotel that is near to the station but the price is a bit high)

2.45AM : arrived at the station

3.45AM : ticket office opens
Again, you got to make sure that you catch the queue. For us, we got 4.20AM tram ticket

5.00AM : arrived Zhushan station
The tram dropped us at this station and we took some steps up to see the sunrise.

When arrived at the station, you will see a sign telling the time the sun will rise.
On 22 Oct, it was 6.23 AM

Up at this station, there is a place you can wait and sit around waiting for the sunrise. There are also small shops selling hot drinks, food, snack and sun glasses too.

6.23AM : The sun rose beautifully.
Thanks God that on that day, there was no fog or rain at all !!! (the driver and many reviews told us that not everytime you could see the sunrise).

At dawn, the sky was very clear.
We even saw a silver lining, stars before it was rise. Many people waited at the trim of mountain waited to see sunrise closely and captured the moment of the day!

6.45AM : After sunrise, we started to take a walk from Zhushan station > Zhaoping station > Shenmu station

The weather was very nice with clear blue sky so we walked along the route (with our local van driver accompanied us as a tour leader) and took time seeing nature.

We visited sister ponds (younger sister pond and elder sister pond).

Then, visited Shenmu station to see the Sacred tree (3,000 years old gigantic red cypress).

Note that there are signs in each station, guiding you the way to go. Don’t be afraid to get lost. And if you are not feel like walking, you can take a tram as it connects to each station.

10.30AM : Finished the route
Here our team already tired, so we bought tram ticket back to Alishan tram station, the beginning.

.....If this is your first time in Taiwan, don’t miss to visit Alishan, it is just a moment in time!
