- Abovetheclouds2,216 contributionsA must!If your only going to go to one temple, then let it be this one. Had I not known that it had received the Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for both restoration and revival of temple rites and festivities, I may not have bothered but glad I did. It is right by the Confucius Temple so you can do both together. There appears to be two parts to Baoan Temple. One is the main temple part and the other looks like a garden that is currently closed November, 2023. Looks like more restoration as I walked past. The highlight is the main temple which is open and at the back. Small but active. It doesn't look like a grand or striking temple as you approach it but go closer and look at the details and colours and you will see why this is a must visit.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten November 5, 2023

The colors, the vibe, the exterior and interior, all of them made it be unique and worth to spend time for walking around and feeling the fresh air. The opposite garden must not be missed.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 2, 2023

All of the structures have detailed, artistic woodwork and there is a lot of variety. The temple is also very active as a lot of people were praying and burning incense when we were there. We saw this and the nearby Confucius temple that is less than a block away. The two temples are quite different and we were glad that we went to both.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 15, 2024

This temple is old and authentic and it's less crowded than the famous Longshan temple. Bonus, just cross the street and there's another nice temple: the Confussus temple which is also worth visiting. It's easily accessible with the MRT.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2024

Ground was broken for the Taipei Bao An Temple in 1804. The temple was intended to protect the clans from Tonglan in the mainland Chinese province of Fujian, in the neighbourhood of Xiamen. The temple is described as being Taiwanese folk religion; it has been classified as being culturally significant by UNESCO. The temple flourished in the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945) and then went into a decline, before recovering. It is opposite the Confucian Temple. The Bao An Temple has much to offer visitors, it is a reminder of the origins in China of many inhabitants of Taiwan.

Baoan Temple is full of noise and smoke. Several deities are worshiped, the main one being Baosheng Dadi, the Emperor of Health. It's mainly a Taoist temple, but it also accommodates other traditions, as is common in China, Baoan Temple was voted as one of Taiwan's top 100 religious sites. It also won a Unesco award. By the say, the temple is a short walk from the Yuanshan station on the MRT Red Line. Just follow the signs,

Great Architecture and interesting place to visit. Wanted to go to the confuscious Temple but Grab driver let us alight at the cross junction of the street instead. Great recommendation by him.

There are so many temples to visit in Taipei, you just can't get to all of them. But certainly visit Paoan Temple. It is right opposite Confucius Temple. Take the red line to Yuanshan station, head down Kulun Street and on your right thru the Chinese Arch and Confucius is on your right and Paoan is on your left. Walk thru the small park and out the side street. The actual Temple is facing you. Beautiful arched buildings and spacious grounds. But be warned, there are many burning spots and many worshippers who are burning sticks. It can be a bit intense with the burning incense. Walk around the main temple to see many smaller enclosed temples. Not accessible, but large opening to view them. They are ornate, colorful and beautifully decorated. Goes without saying the main large temple is also. The carved architecture of the facade is brilliant. This is an easy doable visit, close to the red line.

I found there are no photos be taken at night, even websites outside tripadvisor, so I decide to put some photos here, because it's really a pity if you don't seize the chance enjoy night view here when staying in Taipei.
The open time is am6:30~pm10:00, let residents to pray here. Many people get the incense stick and talk to the god with authentic expression, some of them doing "bwa bwei" . (BTW, "bwa bwei" can be replaced by two coins , Isn't it fun? ^ v ^)
No pushy tourists , filled with beautiful art and vibrant Taiwanese culture, A peaceful place at dusk and at night with Soft lighting upon the temple. No wonder this temple got the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards.
Because of Chinese Communist Party , Taiwan is not member of UN, so there is no property listed on the Unesco’s World Heritage List in Taiwan.

I visited three temples in Taipei (Paoan, Confucius and Longshan). Paoan and Longshan are similar in layout, size, architecture, and artifacts. Confucius is bigger. Paoan and Confucius are located almost next to each other and within a short walk from the Yuanshan Station (R14). My favourite was Paoan: far fewer people than Longshan, interesting stories told by the small figures along the edges just under the roof, interesting details, very pretty flowering trees, and the nice courtyard/park just opposite the temple with its own figures. A couple took wedding photos when I was there. There is a coffee house next to the Paoan temple and a marked on the opposite side of the Yuanshan Station. If only picking one of Paoan and Longshan, I would pick Paoan.

Are there accommodations nearby? Can I get there using public transportation?
Written June 12, 2016
There are some accommodations close to this place but I must say i never tried them. There is metro station ( red line) Yuanshan aprox. 500 meters from the temple and also the bus stop like 200 meters from there.
