With its air of historical heritage, Shuijinjiu (ShueiNanDong, Jingguashi, Jiufen) used to be prosperous and glamorous due to mining. Although its magnificent semblance no longer exists, the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere has persisted. With a wave to the age of the gold rush, one can still see a glimpse of its glorious past through the Golden Waterfall. Gazing at the ShueiNanDong Remains of the 13 Levels, it is like a beautiful palace that was deserted, earning it the name of “Potala Palace of the Mountain Mines”. Probing forward to the mouth of the river is the considerably distinguished Yinyang Sea, with its half gold half bluish green spectacle inspiring countless imaginations of romance.
Walking along the streets of the meandering old streets of Jiufen and tasting the various kinds of authentic eateries is the love of tourists. Stepping into the Golden Museum, one can glimpse the historical traces of the mining industry culture, reminiscing of past glories from its museum, living quarters, and shrine remains.
The unassuming mountain city of Houtong used to be a mining village. With the call of cat lovers, volunteer groups were established to create a friendly environment for cats and turned Houtong into a cat village for cat lovers.

Beautiful sea with different sea colour. Lots of parking area, because the sea near the main road, no need extra effort to go there. If you have drone, it will be more beautiful. No need much time to enjoy this place because its quite simple.

The sea water having yellow and blue is normal due to the mineral of the place. It is something during raining day water from the river with muddy colour meet the sea water.

Yinyang sea is named because of the two distinct colors of the sea at the area, blue and gold. Yinyang sea is interesting but I felt that one do not have to make a special trip just to see the Yinyang sea. You can visit Yinyang sea and Gold Fall if you are visiting Jingguashi, the Gold museum, as the three attractions are nearby.
Note that although they are close to each other, it would be more convenient if you do drive as the public buses' interval are infrequent. Nonetheless, if you wish to take public transport to see Yinyang sea, you can take bus 788 to Shuinandong. Yinyang sea is best viewed from Shuinandong.

As part of our itinerary to Jiufen, we made the obligatory stop. This is a pretty photo opportunity.
I don't know if there is still mining going on, but there is a section, landside, that looks like contaminated water is flowing from the mountains to the sea.
A five minute stop.
Most of Taipei's seafood comes from this region.

Sited on the hills, you can watch the yellow waters of the river merging with the blue of the sea. The surrounding hills exude tranquillity, and the promise of scenic walks. But from the vantage point, it's just hills and the merging waters.

We got to learn about why the Yinyang sea has its name. Firstly, due to the rusted water from the mountains flowing into the sea, and with the minerals sediments, the coastal sea water can be seen with an orangy and blue-ish portion during the day. Second, at certain times of the day, a somwhat 'yin yang' symbol can be seen at the coastal line, due to the first reason. Really nice to drop by and have a look.

This is not labeled at the correct location. It is not easily accessible by public transit and can take up to an hour or more from central Taipei. Although JioFen, another popular tourist location is close to this.

This is a nice photo stop if you're on the way to 金瓜十. Not spectacular (sky was overcast on the day of our visit, so colours were not vibrant), but nice nevertheless. Do ask the driver to stop at a 'safe place'; there are many heavy vehicles on the main road, so do take care.

The sea is viewable from higher ground (if the tour guide know the perfect spot) rather than from the car park area. From the car park area, it is too low so the colour of sea is not that clear. The uniqueness of Yin yang sea is the 2 colours of sea cannot merge where water from ocean is blue while the water from waterfall is yellow. Quite unique and worth to see. It is at the downhill of Jiufen so one should not miss it.

The Yinyang sea is located at the foot of the mountain which used to be a gold mine where the Japanese and the old KMT government mine for gold in Taiwan.
The river has a golden/yellowish coloured bank as a result of the chemical reaction and probably as the "golden" water reaches the sea, the difference in certain properties sets the golden water very distinctively apart from the sea water. Thus forming a very distinctive "Yinyang" look as we viewed the area from a high standpoint.
The mountainous scenery is a beauty to admire. The Yinyang sea just adds to the reason you should visit on your way to Jiufen👍

Hi! I would like to know how long would it take to walk from the golden waterfalls to the yin-yang sea. Thank You in advance !
Written June 9, 2016
It takes only 12 minutes by walking. See the map I charted for your use.
You can go to Google Map and use the trip planning function. Type "黃金瀑布" in the "from" box, and "陰陽海" in the "to" box, then the walking route will be sown. Good luck.
