We went during low season and thought it was closed when we arrived... we bought the tickets and went inside with a nice lady. We notice that the place is big and outdated. Inside the place is nice to discover with a great diversity of formations and natural like lighting.

On our way from Porto to Lisbon we drove through Alvados. Here we have visited two caves, Santo Antonio Caves and Gruta de Alvados. Both very beautiful caves that are very different. We started in Santo Antonio, the larger of the two caves. A friendly guide gave us a clear explanation in English. The cave consists of large areas with... More

we visited Grutas Alvados and thought it was shut, but we went into the ticket office and the chap behind the till sold us a joint ticket for the saint Antonio caves just up the road for a mere 9 euros each. he turned out to be the guide too, so as soon as we paid, he ushered us and... More

There are several cave systems in the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros region, including Grutas Santo Antonio, Grutas Alvados, Grutas de Mira de Aire, and Grutas de Moeda. We'd originally decided to visit the Grutas Alvados. After a long, winding and steep road from our hostel in Alvados, we reached the Grutas Alvados (Alvados Caves), but they... More

This amazing cave is a huge room with a countless number of stalactites and stalagmites in such a small area. It's amazing to see the wonders nature does. And also on the way to the caves it's possible to see very beautiful sights.

The drive to the caves from the coast was very scenic and they were well signposted from the roadside. We decided not to visit the more popular caves in the region in favour of this p,ace and we were pleased with the tour. Our guide spoke excellent English and added value to the visit with lots of information about the... More

These caves are a bit of a secret, but is a must see for all travelling in mid of Portugal. The guide spoke English well enougth to reveal the secret behind this chatedral made by drops of minerals trough thousands of years. Highly recommended.

The Santo Antonio caves are a nice surprise and respite from sunny, organic, lovely Portugal. There is a guided tour in Portuguese but the caves speak for themselves. The stalactite and stalagmites is fascinating; at times and in the dim light it looks like the set of a science fiction city. Get out of the sun and visit these caves,... More
