Door to door, it took us 11 hours to get here from Kunming. Was Yuanyang nice? Yes. Was it worth an 11 hour journey. No. As a top site of China per the Lonely Planet I expected too much. The scenery wasn't spectacular and the villages were not old, traditional or particularly attractive. The terraces were cool but without the... More

You must be there to believe your eyes, stunning view of the rice terraces, many colors, see the sunrise and in the sunset. I got excellent weather - no fog. You should pay 100 yuan to get to this area. You can go from point view to another by minivan - 10-15 yuan to each drive, or you can walk... More

If you go to Yunnan, you must go and see such natural sights of man made farm terraces. It's a 7 hour ride from Kunming but it is worth it.

Apparently you have to be extremely lucky to see sunrise and sunset here. It's mostly foggy and the weather changes by the hour. And I wouldn't recommend cycling here because it's too foggy and a lot of walking down muddy road to villages or scenic platforms. Remember to bring enough local cash as there is no bank or machine here.... More

When I was there in late March, the weather was very foggy, totally no view of the surrounding. As recommended by the hostel, I joined a group of fellow travelers to hike about an hour, 5km, from Douyishu (多依樹) to the mushroom village. Village was rather quiet and deserted, met only a few other tourists and hardly any locals. Spent... More

It takes a long time to get here from kunming, the terraces are not very conveniently located. But that can be a good thing, as the remote location limits the potential hordes of tourists that would otherwise descend upon yuanyang. For travelers who are up for a bit of physical exertion, walks down into the terraces provide a very rewarding... More

The Yuanyang Rice Terraces are rated as one of China's top attractions. Some say that winter is the best time to visit as the water in the terraces makes the sunrises and sunsets particularly spectacular. Unfortunately, during our winter visit it rained constantly with only a brief period when the rain stopped and the clouds parted to enable anything to... More

The valley has several points of view, so you require an hired car to move from place to place. We have been in summer (august) , and we were lucky because it was very sunny during our daily excursion. They told us it was always raining before our arrival, and also the day we left. Weather is not predictable, and... More
