Neighbourhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

- JuliaNottingham, United Kingdom53 contributionsGreat views. And it’s freeIt doesn’t bring you as high as Skytree, but still has amazing view and it’s free! If you are lucky enough with clear day, on the horizon should be Fuji. In the evening great light of city and of Skytree. So visit it twice. It open till 10 pmVisited October 2023Travelled soloWritten October 20, 2023
- Raymond KCairns, Australia5 contributionsAMAZINGwell worth a visit. I only had to line up for a couple of minutes. The view was amazing, 360 degrees view of Tokyo. they have a piano that visitors are encouraged to play, and boy is there some talent out there. And last but not least, it is free entry.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten October 27, 2023
- maaparMount Pleasant, South Carolina968 contributionsGreat views!Went here on a Saturday when the rest of the building is closed. Still a short line to get in but free. South observatory has the best views- so much better than the taller Skytree. You can actually distinguish which building you are looking at and there was a local volunteer who gave us a brief explanation about the cityscape. Worth doing!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 19, 2023
- skyhighpamCalifornia205 contributionsStillness in ShinjukuI stayed near the gov building and found my search by nearby. Im glad I did because it was free and the experience was amazing. I was coming from the main attractions in Shinjuku (near train station) and anyone who has experienced this area can attest it’s pretty busy and filled with noise and people (not a bad thing)… But walking to the gov building to this tower, you can feel the difference and calmness and stillness. It was about a 10-15 walk from Shinjuku train station. It was pretty relaxing walk to the building, the guards were nice enough to direct you the right entrance (i got lost). The entrance is free, I didn’t have to wait long for the elevator up and down, actually no wait really, I went on a Sunday. Being up there with the views and all was just what I needed at that moment. It was relaxing and a quiet time for me. There is a souvenir shop on there as well as coffee/snacks for purchase. You can take your time there and just relax. The volunteers were nice and can explain to you what you looking at & can even take your pic if you are solo traveling. It’s an open space with floor to ceiling window views. I think I was in the south building, was the only thing opened… but it was enough. Also check out their website for hours and all! Its free and the view is amazing.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten February 3, 2024
- CantBeBothered18Adelaide, Australia143 contributionsFantastic view of TokyoWe went at about 2:30pm and there was no queue to go to the north observation tower. It had an amazing view considering there no charge involved. There was also a funky piano that piano players were lining up to play - note that there was a 5-minute limit per player. Overall, it was a pleasant way to get a bird’s eye view of Tokyo with a drink and ice cream at the cafe while getting some souvenir.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 4, 2024
- TheOExpress🏴🇭🇰Hong Kong, China6,047 contributionsAn absolute MUST……if you are nearby. The views during the day or at night are spectacular, it really gives you a sense of the scale of the city, which is truly hard to comprehend when looking at its never-ending sprawl! The gift shop is amazing for tourists and the addition of a piano is quite nice as well, my young daughter even had a go and no one a seemed to mind. Also, and this might be best of all given it’s in Tokyo of all places, it’s FREE to enter.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 14, 2024

- John and Deb KKarratha, Australia822 contributionsGreat FREE ViewsThis building is free to visit the viewing platform. The first day we went we were too early as it doesn't open until 9am. So we went on other adventures and came back at 6pm but the line was so long we didn't bother. The next day we turned up at 7pm after a full day of activities we stood in a long line ( not as long as the day before) but it moved relatively quickly. When we got up to the viewing platform it was great and really showcased how large Tokyo is. There is a gift shop for those who want. For us when we got back to the ground floor there was the largest laser light show on Earth on the building facade it was amazing, no sure how much longer it will be on, you will need to google it.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 1, 2024
- Christian MCopenhagen, Denmark6,149 contributionsA View with Sweet SoundsIt's definitely worth stopping by the government building with its sky-high twin towers. Just the square in front with its fine sculptures is a lovely sight. It's free to go up to the large room with a 360-degree spectacular view of Tokyo's skyline. On clear days, you can reportedly see all the way to Mount Fuji. In the middle of the room stands a piano, and here local talents entertain with good music while we guests enjoy both the view and the sweet sounds. Thank you, Tokyo, for this fine attraction.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 7, 2024

We waited half and hour for the free view at the top of this building. There’s great views and good signage as to what you are looking at. Volunteer guides hang around offering help and there’s a spot to buy souvenirs and snacks, and to sit. The Yayoi Kasumi painted piano is a plus, which you can plsy after 2pm.

Everybody loves a lookout and they are usually quite expensive. Instead of Sky Tree or Tokyo Tower which are both quite expensive, why not go to The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings. Might sound boring but the views are not. Get there early to avoid the crowds and it the weather is clear you will see Mt Fuji as well. You get 360 degree views of Tokyo/ Greater Tokyo and can also visit the cafe and large souvenir shop too.

After paying a lot of money to go up in the Tokyo Tower during the daytime, we came here in the evening to go up to the observatory on the 45th floor. We had no wait for the elevator and while there were a decent number of people enjoying the view, it wasn't crowded. The views were stunning and it was completely free! There's a small shop so you can sit and have a snack or buy souvenirs if you wish. Highly recommend doing this to see the lights of Tokyo at night!

Amazing views of the Tokyo skyline and, I’m told, if you go in the morning you might get to see Mount Fuji.
Went in both the afternoon and the evening and pleased we did. Sadly the glare of the inside lights do mean you need a very good camera to get decent night time photos

Visiting on a late Sunday afternoon, we zipped up to the 45th floor to watch the sunset over Tokyo. The observatory wasn’t overly busy so we got great 360 views and thankfully saw a glimpse of Mt. Fuji in the distance. With free entry and a cafe, this was a lovely way to spend a few hours watching the sunset and seeing the world below go by… This feels almost like a hidden gem!
Note: It can be easy to miss the entrance as it’s tucked away so recommend Google Mapping your way here!

A excellent observatory facility on the north and south buildings. Although most tourists recommend to walk from Shinjuku Station, the best is actually from the Marunouchi Line because the subway station is to the north of the complex. The view is great especially when you have a zoom lens so you can take closeup shots of nearby buildings. The facility is free which means lineups will be long.

Close to Shinjuku Station, only the South Tower was open for visitors since the other one was temporarily taken over for COVID testing.
The elevator was located in the basement and I just had to get my hands sanitized and my backpack inspected before heading up the elevator by myself.
At the observation floor it was not very busy and the biggest attraction was the Omoide Piano, a donation from a local from Tokyo. Anyone could queue in line to plane a song on the piano. It was a nice background during the visit.
Views were clear all around and a couple of English volunteers were explaining parts of the skyline to visitors.
I spent less than 20 minutes here with a larger elevator crowd on the decent.
If you have time afterwards there was a small Tokyo 2020 Olympic retrospective on the first floor. They even had simulated medals for holding and I got to see how heavy they were.

This is a must -see while in Tokyo. The views of the city are unbelievable and to top it off, entrance is free! There was also people taking turns playing a baby grand piano up there; each person was better than the last. All classically trained. Just amazing!

Fabulous views of the city of Tokyo for free. It was a clear day and we could see Mt Fuji! There was an "open mike" piano for people to come and play, added to our enjoyment. I wish we had had time to see the view at night.

How long do you spend there? From queuing at the lift to get up till you are back down? 30mins/1hr?
Written November 9, 2023
I spent 25 queuing one day and no queue at all another day when the weather was not so good. Up in the platform you can spend all the time, you want, there is no limit , it depends on you , but I should say minimum 15 minutes to go around all the windows .
