Top ways to experience Ueno Park
The area
Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

Saw Inari Fox Shrine, lily pond, 5 story pagoda that survived the 1923 earthquake, had a coffee at Starbucks and shopped at the small Tokyo National Museum gift shop. There's lots to see here, and it's very pretty during the cherry blossom season or in the autumn. It is usually pretty busy, but it's so big, I don't think the amount of people detracts from the joy of it. We especially like the shrine and the pagoda...oh and the people watching!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 20, 2024
- Jeff KPittsburgh, Pennsylvania2,206 contributionsVery Enjoyable ParkWe were a little early to catch the cherry blossoms but liked this park a lot, notwithstanding the bare trees. It’s easy to get here via the subway and there’s a lot to see. We visited two museums, a temple, strolled the park and ate lunch from the street vendors. Everything is very convenient. Lots of bathrooms, too. Highly recommended.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 19, 2024

Food, alcohol, deserts were sold amongst other things. All the museums centre towards this park but some were closed during our visit. Theres a decent amount of park benches everywhere and some cherry blossoms were blooming on our visit. RecommendedVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 5, 2024

It is no exaggeration to say that this park is a "Aggregation of art and culture". Science, art, theatrical performances, shrines and temples, street performances, etc., all kinds of art and culture, both ancient and modern, are gathered in this park. Even if it doesn't have any particular event, the park is large enough to enjoy just strolling around. The cherry blossom trees that line the park are synonymous with Tokyo's springtime attractions, and many tourists from Japan and abroad visit the park to view the blossoms.
Since it is one of the most famous spots for sightseeing in Tokyo, many tourists flock to the park when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and other events are being held, sometimes ruining the quiet atmosphere of the park. Also, the park is sometimes very dirty with garbage scattered around by some uncaring visitors. Crows and other animals gather to eat the food in the garbage and spread their feces around, making it even dirtier.
If you avoid the crowded times of the year and stroll around with good manners, you will have a wonderful time.

This park is great for walking and relaxing. Full of trees, with museums and attractions around it, some shops and a starbucks to chill when te weather is hot. This place seems to be frecuentated by locals a lot, which allows to mingle around. Ueno station is just steps from the park.

We walked through this park to get to the Tokyo National Museum, but it also houses the National Western Art Museum, the National Museum of Nature and Science, several shrines/temples and the Ueno Zoo.
The paths through the park are large and were uncrowded when we visited. The shrines/temples were easy to get to and view. There were a lot of directional signs to help you get to where you were going. While there, we saw some sort of small wild animal, but I was unable to tell what it was (maybe a baby deer?). The natural aspects of the park were stunning and I enjoyed the serenity and calmness opposed to the larger Tokyo City hustle and bustle.
Great place to picnic, take a walk, or just a moment to relax.

Lots of shrines, a zoo, National Museum etc is here - well worth walking around but it is large. Starbucks coffee is next to National Museum - very handy after a long walk with lots of outdoor seating on warm sunny days. Shrines are nearby and well worth a visit. Must be beautiful here when the cherry blossoms are out in the spring - something we will have to do on our return visit.

Our accommodation in Tokyo was a short bus ride to this park .
The first time we went , we didn’t realise it was a public holiday.
It was really very busy , but once we wandered away from the lake and the zoo it was a lot quieter .
It just happened to be a very sunny + warm 24c day , fortunately there is lots of shade and places to get food and drinks .
Our next visit , was a quiet weekday .
We had already visited the shrine , so this time we opted to go to the museum of art .
Very relaxing and pleasant afternoon out

In the center of a big metropolis, there is such a relaxing space. It is indeed amazing. In Ueno Park, there are many things: zoo, museums, temple, shrines, etc. It is absolutely worth visiting. If possible, it is nice to spend a half day in this park.

After my earlier visit to Naga Meguro I went to Ueno Park to view the blooming cherry blossoms over there. Ueno Park is quite famous for the huge amounts of cherry blossom trees.
However I always have the idea that the whole of Tokyo is going to Ueno Park. This time sitting below the trees was not allowed though because of COVID, so everybody was strolling through the park.
Nevertheless Ueno Park maintains to be a great spot to see the blooming cherry trees. Especially the small walking road across the pond is something not to be missed. I really love this track with left and right beautiful cherry trees.
For a first-time blossom tree visitor in Japan I really advice this park to get started.

Compared to other parks, this was average for us. No entrance fees. There were not much any places to rest other than the Starbucks and another cafe nearby. Since hanami was not allowed, you can't sit along the walkway through the cherryblossoms. So you have to continuously walk - we did stumble upon some beautiful shrines along the way and of course, there's Ueno Zoo. If you're planning to eat here, better buy some at the Ueno station before walking through the park.

This park is right outside one of the exits of Ueno Station, so it’s very accessible. There’s plenty to see here: shrines, lotus ponds, museums, zoo & outdoor art. I love the sculptures of Rodin. The lotus pond is dead during winter but looking at the size of it, I can imagine the incredible beauty when it’s in full bloom. I did not go into the zoo but I saw a lot of interesting birds on the pond. There’re some interesting buskers doing their stuff in the park so it was quite entertaining too. Overall, it’s a nice to wander around and a nice change from the usual shopping streets of Tokyo.

I was lucky to visit Ueno Park in the sakura season. There are big, beautiful sakura trees in the entrance of the Park, which is easily reachable with metro, getting off in Ueno Station.
It is a very big park with a long and wide road, surrounded by sakura trees, several temples, museums and a zoo. The place is quite wide, with many things to see, therefore if you want to see the whole area, you must spend more than half a day.
I preferred to watch the sakuras, have a nice walk and visit the temples.
It was crowded, but still a very quite and peaceful place in the middle of the big Tokyo city.

Hello, I was wondering how much time I should reasonably allocate to see Ueno Park and the Museum of Nature and Science as a solo traveler. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Would 3 hours be enough to see the museum and maybe the zoo? We have 5.5 hours of layover time from Narita. I'm more interested in seeing Ueno Park than the places in Narita, but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.
Written October 14, 2018
It takes 1 hour each way from narita airport to the city. That's 2 hours gone already and it cost $25 each way on the airport express train. At the train terminal, you would have to take a taxi or subway to your site. You would have a two hours only to see one site. Not worth it in my opinion. Best to see something at or near airport.

Is it similar to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco or Central Park in New York in a sense? Like it’s a huge park that you need more time to explore and enjoy how locals enjoy the park, rather than just visiting for a bit?
Written October 3, 2018
I can't compare because i didn't visit San Francisco yet.
Ueno Park was very nice especially during sakura (cherry blossom) end of March April.
There's a lot to see in Ueno Park like zoo, museum etc. Don't missed to visit Ueno if you are in Tokyo.

Ueno Park is the most 'user friendly' place so to speak. It is astonishly beautiful no matter what time of the year you visit. PLUS! Galleries,Museums, Temples and Shrines. There is also a Zoo ... I am not intersted as caged animals are against my believes, but some people enjoy it. So, I am not in the positin to make comments about the Zoo as never entered.
The park is spectatular any time of the year you visit. You can easily spend a whole day there if so inclined.
Lotus lake is to die for.
Don't get me stared as I could go for ever.;-) Absolutely magcal place no matter what time of the year you visit. Enjoy!
