About
Starting with Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa and kanei-ji Temple in Ueno, the current Taito-ku, which has been in full swing as a temple town, has reorganized the city area of Edo, and many craftsmen began to gather here. Asakusa flourished as a premiere place together with Okuyama in Senso-ji Temple in Edo by moving Yuri "Yoshihara", Kabuki and the theater of the Japanese puppet show to Asakusa. The supply of manpower and goods has increased and skills of craftsmen have come to be required in various situations. Under such historical background, many craftsmen gathers in Taito-ku and they inherits traditional technique until now and continues activities. The Center has been reopened in March 2013 with a large display and an on-site exhibition commentary compatible with a smartphone, so that traditional crafts can be widely introduced to more people in Japan and abroad. We regularly display about 250 items in about 48 industries, including Edo Sudare, Tokyo Kiri Tansu and Edo Sashimo.

Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

This tiny museum is worth seeing if you are already in the area, and it might be a wonderful experience if the craftspeople are there working. We delight in meeting artists and craftspeople who can talk with us about their work. Without the artists present, it is an average museum.
Despite the fact that it is listed as a place to buy traditional crafts, I would definitely not recommend it for the purpose based on what we saw in the lobby/entrance area.

This is a very small museum showing examples of Japanese crafts. On the first floor near the entry there is a space for different craftsmen to work. You can watch them. On the second floor is a selection of different handmade items on display, for example combs, brushes, scissors, knives, fishing rods, furniture.
This museum is very small, entry is free. It might not be worth a separate trip, but if you are in the area and interested in crafts it is worth visiting. The museum is located inside the Hisago-dori shopping street near the crossing of Kototoi-dori and Kokusai-dori, not far from Hanayashiki amusement park.

Free admission at Edo Shitamachi Traditional Crafts Museum, worth the visit because they displayed local crafts. Interesting!

This is a small and incomplete representation of Tokyo crafts, managed by the local association. Staff were friendly, but the displays simply can't compare to the much more comprehensive displays (which are also for sale) at the Japan Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square, which in fact shows a wider range of Tokyo makers.
