About
Group and Off Season Tours can be booked in April, 2023. This “Cultural Tourism Award” winner is a 20 minute ferry ride from scenic Portugal Cove. When you arrive, the #2 Underground Mine Tour & Museum is a 5 minute car ride from the ferry dock. At our facility you will be greeted by local tour guides who will share our history and tell you amazing stories about our forefathers. You'll be inspired by tales of these hard working Bell Islanders who risked their lives to supply the world markets with precious iron ore and were instrumental in contributing to the economic stability of the province of Newfoundland Labrador in the early 1900's.
Our experience includes a walking tour that goes down into the #2 Mine to 650 feet on a 10 degree slope. Wear a jacket or warm sweater, it is 6 degrees. After your tour, sit and enjoy a cup of our own Miners' Blend Coffee with a treat in our newly renovated Mug Up Coffee Shop.

- Matt M2 contributionsInformative but rude…..Tour was very informative, but don’t do it with small children. The tour guide we had was extremely rude to our family and another family that happened to have a small child with them. Basically told us to leave the group before the tour started if they happened to make any noise. Would of been 5 star review if it wasn’t for the rudeness of the guide. The board and staff of the Bell Island Heritage Society Inc. wish to sincerely thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience while visiting the Bell Island #2 Mine Tour and Museum. It is disappointing to learn that you were not satisfied with your visit. We have welcomed thousands of children to our site with their families, their school, their day camp as well as youth groups from all over the world. All of our tour guides are exemplary in dealing with children of all ages. We are truly very surprised by your overview. As Executive Director, I apologize that your trip into our mine was not everything you had hoped it would be. - Peggy BConception Bay South, Canada1 contributionDifferent tour guide needed.there was 4 adults and a 1 year old. I taught it was a family tour. The little one that was with us was pretty quiet. There was another couple with 2 little ones with them and the tour guide. I'm thinking his name was Brian told the parents to stay away from the group and then a little while later told the child to shhhh. I taught it was a family thing to do this tour. The board and staff of the Bell Island Heritage Society Inc. wish to sincerely thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience while visiting the Bell Island #2 Mine Tour and Museum. - krysta m1 contributionNot kid friendlyDo not recommend doing this tour if you have a child that can’t stand like a statue. The tour was very cool and full of history but the tour guy ruined the experience with his attitude towards the families with smaller kids. The comments made if one of the children made any noise were 100% unnecessarily. Maybe have “adult” tours and “family” tours with guides that have appropriate personalities per each group. Also to sit us down at the end and ask for a good review after telling two families to get away from the group is shocking. The board and staff of the Bell Island Heritage Society Inc. wish to sincerely thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience while visiting the Bell Island #2 Mine Tour and Museum. Bell Island was one of the highlights of our trip to Newfoundland. Went with our family and our friends family. I hadn’t even heard of it before but was well worth the trip. Our tour guide at the mine was the best, she was great with our eight year old.

Don't let the name of this tour fool you; the #2 Mine experience is nothing short of captivating. You will find out why it is named #2 Mine, along with many intriguing facts about the mining history of Bell Island. Our expedition through #2 Mine was led by Brian, who was an excellent guide. He has many family stories and personal connections with the mine that he shared with us. The history of Bell Island and the mines is fascinating. If you are in the St. John's area you should definitely plan to spend time on Bell Island with the mine tour as an absolute must-see on your itinerary.

We had the most amazing time learning all about the history and personal stories given by our well educated guide. Brian was awesome I felt like I wanted to try mining for a day. They made special arrangements to give us the tour as we travelled dying off season. 10 out of 10 recommend taking the ferry to bell island to take this tour.

The tour was a trip back in time, a reminder of how much things have changed and the people that built the world we live in, but also an insight into how well thought out and sophisticated industrial operations were a century ago.

My husband and I will be visiting in July. I am wondering which is the best way to visit bell island, walking onto the ferry or taking car into ferry. Thanks.
The #2 Mine Tour & Museum is roughly 3.5 km from the ferry terminal. There are other sites that are a must while visiting our beautiful island. I would suggest, in order to have a full experience, a vehicle would certainly be an asset.
We open for the season on Tuesday, May 29th. and close for the season on Sunday, September 30th. ’18. We are open 7 days a week from 10 am to 6 pm with the final tour going into the mine at 5 pm. We follow the boat schedule which means tours are generally on the hour. The tour takes between 45 minutes to one hour. You do not have to pre-book unless you have a group of over 10 people. Please wear a jacket or warm sweater, as it is 6 degrees in the mine. Also, please wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. It is a walking tour that goes down 650 feet on a 10 degree slope. When you leave the ferry on Bell Island, please follow the signs with the Miners' Helmet that says No. 2 Mine Tour. There are, usually, two ferries operating. The schedule can be found on the government website.
We look forward to greeting you.

Hi, we will be in St Johns in August and really want to do this tour. Where do you book it, and how is the transportation to Bell Island arranged?

I understand that there are no time restrictions on the above-ground time of the tour. Is this correct? How long does the underground portion of the mine tour take? Do tours run on a strict timetable? Thank you.

The above ground tour is open ended (apart from opening and closing times) - below ground takes around an hour.
I can't remember why its getting colder when we are at the end of the mine? Is it because of the ocean? Cauz usually more u get closer to the middle of the earth more it gets warm?!

Hi there,
I was born in BI and am planning on visiting next weekend. Do I need to schedule a tour of the mines and other places? If not, how do I go about seeing my little town?
Thank you,

Hello Brenda Moore (Mercer),
No, you don't need to schedule a tour, but just to let you know, we are open at 10:00am, the first tour goes down around 10:30am and the last tour goes down around 5:00pm. In between first and last tour, we follow the boat schedule as best as possible. The tour itself takes about an hour and you may want to have a jacket or sweater, it's about 6 degrees in the mines! The staff will be most helpful in helping you plan the rest of your day touring your home town of Bell island!
Hope this help and hope to see you soon!
