About
Closed for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Opening May 2021. Group and Off Season Tours can be booked in April, 2021. This “Cultural Tourism Award” winner is a 20 minute ferry ride from scenic Portugal Cove. When you arrive, the #2 Underground Mine Tour & Museum is a 5 minute car ride from the ferry dock. At our facility you will be greeted by local tour guides who will share our history and tell you amazing stories about our forefathers. You'll be inspired by tales of these hard working Bell Islanders who risked their lives to supply the world markets with precious iron ore and were instrumental in contributing to the economic stability of the province of Newfoundland Labrador in the early 1900's. Our experience includes a walking tour that goes down into the #2 Mine to 650 feet on a 10 degree slope. Wear a jacket or warm sweater, it is 6 degrees. After your tour, sit and enjoy a cup of our own Miners' Blend Coffee with a treat in our newly renovated Mug Up Coffee Shop.

Bell island is separated with Newfoundland island but very close. You can reach this island by tour travel agent from Downtown the city of St. John's. the ferry will bring you cross the bay to Bell island. Explore your mine tour and going to the deep of the earth bellow the sea level of Bell island, The community museum was iron mine that operated since before World War I and continues to World War II

Tour of the mine was absolutely fabulous with detailed information about the mine when it was open and we learned a lot. What an experience that no one should miss. Very interesting and price was not very expensive, but well worth every cent.

Everyone at the Museum was wonderful! Bonnie was unbelievably kind to my mother who was celebrating her 80th birthday by returning home to the island that she left when she was 16. Bonnie shared personal connections with the mine. The others in the museum were also eager to share their experiences of island life. My family thoroughly enjoyed our time on Bell Island!

This was well worth the time. The museum is very interesting, the tour guide was excellent. He added many personal stories from his father's and grandfathers' time in the mine. Incredibly interesting to learn how the mine worked.

This tour was very interesting and well presented. Our tour guide, Bonnie was incredible. She was very knowledgeable, lively, and brought some special effects to the mine tour experience. It was amazing and moving. Bonnie was supportive of us having young children and she was so kind
She made the tour a lot of fun and more interesting than i imagined it would have been.
The stories of the workers and community members of this mining town came to life for us as we toured underground and also above ground through their museum. The museum had many items and photos that told the amazing stories of these miners and their families.
This guided tour was very informative and interesting. We would suggest this experience for all ages. (Going on the underground mine tour requires the ability to walk, but young children could do it easily). We brought our 7mo old in a carrier and another family had their 4 year old walk with them.
Thank you Bonnie and others at the Bell Island Mine Tour

Fantastic visit. Our guide Brian was very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of this very interesting mine. His grandparents had worked in the mines for many years and Brian was able to bring their stories to life.
We enjoyed the small museum of artifacts after the tour. I thought I might feel a little claustrophobic but the mine is fairly open and it didn’t bother me at all.
We highly recommend a visit to this significant historic place. Taking the quick ferry was added fun and only $22 round trip for 4 adults.

My husband and I will be visiting in July. I am wondering which is the best way to visit bell island, walking onto the ferry or taking car into ferry. Thanks.
The #2 Mine Tour & Museum is roughly 3.5 km from the ferry terminal. There are other sites that are a must while visiting our beautiful island. I would suggest, in order to have a full experience, a vehicle would certainly be an asset.
We open for the season on Tuesday, May 29th. and close for the season on Sunday, September 30th. ’18. We are open 7 days a week from 10 am to 6 pm with the final tour going into the mine at 5 pm. We follow the boat schedule which means tours are generally on the hour. The tour takes between 45 minutes to one hour. You do not have to pre-book unless you have a group of over 10 people. Please wear a jacket or warm sweater, as it is 6 degrees in the mine. Also, please wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. It is a walking tour that goes down 650 feet on a 10 degree slope. When you leave the ferry on Bell Island, please follow the signs with the Miners' Helmet that says No. 2 Mine Tour. There are, usually, two ferries operating. The schedule can be found on the government website.
We look forward to greeting you.

Hi, we will be in St Johns in August and really want to do this tour. Where do you book it, and how is the transportation to Bell Island arranged?

I understand that there are no time restrictions on the above-ground time of the tour. Is this correct? How long does the underground portion of the mine tour take? Do tours run on a strict timetable? Thank you.

The above ground tour is open ended (apart from opening and closing times) - below ground takes around an hour.
I can't remember why its getting colder when we are at the end of the mine? Is it because of the ocean? Cauz usually more u get closer to the middle of the earth more it gets warm?!

Hi there,
I was born in BI and am planning on visiting next weekend. Do I need to schedule a tour of the mines and other places? If not, how do I go about seeing my little town?
Thank you,

Hello Brenda Moore (Mercer),
No, you don't need to schedule a tour, but just to let you know, we are open at 10:00am, the first tour goes down around 10:30am and the last tour goes down around 5:00pm. In between first and last tour, we follow the boat schedule as best as possible. The tour itself takes about an hour and you may want to have a jacket or sweater, it's about 6 degrees in the mines! The staff will be most helpful in helping you plan the rest of your day touring your home town of Bell island!
Hope this help and hope to see you soon!
