This is the site where the lost Battalion fought in WWI. You can still see the foxholes (almost filled with leaves) where the Americans dug in to avoid the German fire from above. This area is heavily wooded. Many of the American soldiers were either Italian or Irish and from New York city and were not used to fighting in the woods. However the Germans were hunters and used to this kind of terrain. The American were street fighter types and did not want to surrender. Started out with about 600 men and were left with less than two hundred. There was a scarcity of food and water for this week long battle because they were surrounded. Shelled by their own troops but rescued by Cher Ami a wounded carrier pigeon. Quite a story of bravery. There is no cost to visit this site.

There are two monuments on the side of the road D66 near Binarville that mark the area where from 2 to 7 October 1918 nine companies of the 77th Division were isolated by German forces. Seven Congressional Medals of Honor and over 30 Distinguished Service Crosses we’re earned in this battle.

This small but significant sign post on a most remote wooded road marks a place of significance in the struggle of freedom in Europe. We were pleased to be a part of honouring the bravery and heroics of these courageous soldiers. The terrain makes their determination even more striking.

The marker is on the south side of the road that was the "battalion" objective. The American soldiers were pinned down on the slope below the marker. The slope is steep and may be a bit of a challenge, if you want to be where so many died, and many fought and survived. One of the biggest stories of the American effort of the war took place here.

Historical site of major importance. Beautiful environment, with a tragical story to tell. Glad I've visited the site.
