- Jet105961905333 contributionsJust stunning! The sunrise at Mesa Arch is truly spectacular. As indicated in other reviews, you need to arrive well in advance of sunrise because many photographers set up tripods to capture the perfect shot. That means getting to the park before the entrance station is open (so you have to find your way to the arch without a map!), and hiking about a quarter of a mile on a fairly easy trail in the dark. (Headlamps recommended!) Well worth it even if you’re generally not a morning person or hiker!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten October 24, 2023
- JW041Evansville, Indiana381 contributionsStunning but crowded.A must see. Not a long hike and I think just about any skill level can do it. Not wheelchair assessable though. Lots of people. Some will take turns letting others get some photos and some are plain jerks hogging up the space and not letting others get photos. Despite the crowdedness and photo hogs, it’s really special to see.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten November 5, 2023
- DontStopExploringWinnipeg, Canada1,994 contributionsSpectacularMesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park is an easy hike to a breathtaking vista. Lots of people on the trail and parking lot was full. Try to get there early or come back in the evening. I hear sunset is a spectacular viewVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024
- Rich JNaples, Florida397 contributionsBeautiful most any time of day. This was our second time visiting Mesa Arch and it never gets old. It’s a beautiful photogenic arch. It’s not too long of a walk from the parking lot. Lots of people wanting their picture under the arch with the spectacular view behind it. We did not attempt to be there for the 5:45am sunrise. I’m told there’s dozens of photographers every morning getting a prime spot for the sunrise image.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 1, 2024
- travel-from-NY-79New York City, New York49 contributionsExcellent for sunrise spectacular views!Don’t miss opportunity! this is an easy to moderate 0.7 mile trail. Short 30 min round trip hike… most part is easy flat but there are some steps and rocks to climb but not bad. Go for sunrise and go early so u can find your spot as it gets crowded as the time comes closer to the sunrise the whole arch gets filled!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 10, 2024
- SonluvrBel Air, Maryland132 contributionsSimply gorgeous.A beautiful place to watch the sunrise, even though it was cloudy the day we visited, so we didn't get to see the arch glow. I do wish people would be respectful of others and talk quietly at the sunrise. There are pit toilets at the trailhead.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 12, 2024

This one will require a small hike to get to. The path is easy enough and you can take your time. One side goes in and an adjacent route will bring you back.
The parking lot isn’t very big though - not when it comes to popular hours it seems. And we tried to visit for the sunrise, like almost everyone else in the park that pre-dawn morning. I think we took one of the last available spots. We rushed the hike a bit and when we got to the open rocky area we saw plenty of others roaming around or strategically placed in spots in front of the arch with their camera equipment all set up, anticipating the sunrise.
If you thought you were going to get a pristine shot of the sunrise and the arch, think again. Chances are you’ll have someone else’s equipment and/or backside featured in your photo!
Show up earlier than you think to get that perfect spot (and hope someone else won’t set up their tripod right in front if you!
On either side of the arch are amazing views too. Don’t miss those. Scramble/walk up the rocks and look down and into the distance. If you’re afraid of heights, maybe skip the looking down part.
The morning we arrived, the sunrise wasn’t as exhilarating as the images we’d seen prior to our Canyonlands visit. The weather wasn’t cool and a slight haze in the air just kept the sky a bit subdued The sun did come up and added some nice color to everything it touched though!

My memory of this magical arch is marred by something else I saw: a man walking on top of it, risking a 1,300-foot fall if he tripped, slipped or got blown canyonward by a gust of wind.
Part of what makes Mesa Arch so special is its location: on the edge of a cliff. That, of course, is also what makes it dangerous: crowds of people moving in close quarters around and under the arch, often focused more on taking a picture than on watching where they step.
The other thing that makes this arch special: the way the rising sun makes the underside of the arch glow bright orange.
I'd rate this the second-best stop in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, the best being Grand View Point Overlook (see my review, "Top attraction in Island in the Sky district").
TIPS:
* Sunrise here is reportedly special, but even arriving at midmorning you'll still get that glowing underside of the arch on a sunny day.
* The trickiest part of the half-mile (roundtrip) hike to get to the arch is not losing the trail, which seems to come and go. Follow the crowds or, failing that, look for the piles of rocks which serve as trail markers.

We came here for a late October sunrise, it had snowed the night before and was bitter cold in the morning (wind chills near zero). Yes we were very cold, but I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. The views were stunning, and seeing Canyonlands covered in snow added to the experience. You do have to maneuver around all the professional photographers who get there early to snag the best locations for photos, but you can still get some magical shots of your own.

Pretty cool to see. Not really a hike but a short walk. Makes for a good photo op. Easy to get to the Arch from the trailhead but this also means it is heavily visited. Views at sunrise are told to be spectacular

Easy Hike. Different view at Sunrise and PM. Greater crowds before sunrise. It rained on the day we went so didnt get the money shot but people left right after sunrise so then it was empry with light rain and clouds.

It is impossible to take a bad photo of this arch. There's a short hike to the arch with some ups and downs. Be sure to follow the trail closely because it is easy to lose in a few places. I saw some people get side tracked and end up on a ledge that didn't lead to the arch.
For the best photos, I recommend the morning. The lighting is the best then. Be aware that you will NOT have this arch to yourself. This is a very popular stop and you will have to wait a long time to get a distance shot without people in it.

The arch itself is impressive as is the view through it to the canyon and the steep drop on the other side. The hike isn't strenuous, but go early if you can since it will get crowded. You can find lots of places nearby to get views of the arch and get nice shots, a little patience to wait for different groups to clear out will give a photo without anyone in front

Canyonlands NP is pretty famous for its sunrise, Windows 7 wallpaper of Mesa Arch sunrise was shot here, since then photography enthusiasts flocked to the arch. But to watch the sunrise is a happy chore. The beautiful sunrise is usually on the mountain or on the seashore.
When I reached at Mesa Arch before dawn, I realized that the shooting location was already very cramped. At sunrise, the stone beams are dyed golden, and in the distance are mountains, forests, cliffs and snow mountains, which are really stunningly beautiful.

I am a photographer and enjoyed one of the most vivid sunrises of my life a week ago today at Mesa Arch. It's definitely a "must see" for any Utah vacation. There was a group of people there but everyone was more than happy to avail the view to everyone

I came here with my younger siblings and heard it was a favorite hike in Canyonlands. It ended up exceeding expectations. The walk was short, but the views were great. You get right next to a small arch that frames a canyon background. Some people climb the arch, but that is illegal and damages the fragile sandstone layers, so I warn against it. The canyon behind the arch is vast and geologically unique, even if it wasn’t as amazing as other canyon national parks. Nonetheless, this was the highlight of a decent Utah national park.

From my research if we wanted to get there at sunrise in mid-April (so about 6:45) we should leave Moab about 5:15-5:30am. It sounds like those days are an especially popular time for this park due to tail end of Spring Break, and I especially think this year due to Covid it'll be even busier. Any insights into if this will be ample time and if the parking lot will already be full by 6am? We're going during the week, Monday or Tuesday, so hoping that will help. We're not morning people by any means, so trying to inch out every bit of sleeping time while also being sure not to get there too late. Thanks!

I would shoot to get to the trailhead 40 min before sunrise. April is a busy time but the weekday should help and the vast majority of people just aren't willing to get up this early. I suspect you will be just ahead of the crowd. It's a 45-50 min drive. If it were me, I would leave Moab at 5:15am for a 645 sunrise.

I usually look on Google. For the average temps for the month! I'm going early October and ranges from 70 to 95!
Written August 25, 2019
So if sunrise is +/- 6:40 on the day I plan to be there, what would you suggest is a good time to head out there? I want to be early and I know there'll be plenty of other folks. Also, how many entrances are there to Canyonlands?
Thanks in advance, this forum helps so much!
Written March 16, 2017
It depends on where you are leaving from - Moab? There is only one paved entrance to the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands, which is where Mesa Arch is. From US191, turn west onto Utah Route 313, which becomes Island in the Sky Road inside the park boundaries. It's about 35-40 miles from Moab to Mesa Arch parking lot, and then there is about .3 mile hike to the arch. If you want to be sure to be there at sunrise, I'd allow a minimum of 90 minutes from Moab.

I'm staying at a hotel in Monticello. Can I drive up to see the sunrise at mesa arch if we're not camping there?
Written September 25, 2016
The arch is in the national park. Anyone can drive into the park to see the arch. If you want the pictures at sunrise, get there early. People are there up to an hour before sunrise to get the closest spots.

doing a Utah park tour..we are seniors and wonder if Canyonlands is a good place to visit if we are not hikers
Written March 22, 2016
Absolutely, visit Canyonlands. Most of the great views in the Island in the Sky are only steps away from your vehicle...no hiking necessary.
Mesa Arch does require a short hike and you will have to go over a small hill, but it is worth it. The Grand View and the Green River Overlook are accessible over flat paved trails and are close to the parking lots.
While you are there, go to Dead Horse Point State Park, It also has great views without hiking.
