We’ve done a lot of overlooks of the canyon, stopping at every shuttle stop including the Hermit road, but the Yaki Point ended up being the one that we preferred.
Accessible only via shuttle (the orange one), there isn’t 1 billion cars that could disturb your visit.
I’ll let you see it by your eyes.

Take the orange shuttle from the visitor center. There are two stops along the way offering great views and wildlife. Yaki is at the end and gives a deeper perspective than Mather Point does. It can be done in 45 min, but take all the time possible. Its beautiful!

You can't drive to this outlook, you have to take one of the shuttles. It is the same shuttle that takes the hikers out in the morning. You need to get to the bus depot early, because it is difficult to find your way around in the dark if you haven't been to the canyon before. The shuttle will take only 15 minutes to get you to Yaki.
Yaki is a great spot with the canyon wide open for you in the morning. The best photo spot I found was about 300 yards east of the main viewing area along the rim.

This was one of our favorite stops. There is a small dirt lot just past the turnoff where the buses take you. Do not take the bus but instead drive your car to the small dirt lot 100 feet past the turnoff and park there. Then walk across the street to the trail that cuts through the trees to the road. Once we were closer to the end of the road we got off the pavement and walked along the rim of the canyon. It was very quiet and peaceful. Like all the other stops, most people just get out of the bus/car and see only the immediate area. We walked and took photos for over an hour of the canyon with no one around. This is a great area that you can explore with great views and very little people except at the very end of the road.

Yaki point is a great spot to watch the sunrise. The yellow shuttle starts about an hour before sunrise so you can get there early and catch all the pre-sunrise beauty. Good choice for sunrise. Stay about half hour after sunrise to catch all the shadows and the beauty they create as the sun moves higher in the sky. [If you're really adventurous, hike down south kaibab trail instead to 'ooh ahh' point (around 0.9 miles) for the sunrise - that is THE best place to watch sunrise]

We parked at the visitor center and took the shuttle to Yaki Point. We arrived about 30 minutes before sunrise and wore headlamps. There is small viewing area but really, if you walk away from that, further up is a much better spot where you can actually see the sun break.
The area wasn't crowded as I imagine it is at, say, Mather Point.
You have 180 degree views. Don't just look at the direction of the sun but look at the canyon as it is illuminated. We had a glorious sunrise and every minute the light changed and the canyon looked different and even more beautiful. The light will start to kiss the points in the canyon in a lovely warm glow.
Try to scout the day before for a good spot as it can be hard to determine the best place to be in the dark. Also, be mindful in the dark as there will be nothing to keep you from falling.

We read on a travel blog to get up early to watch the sun come up over the Grand Canyon at Yaki Point. WORTH IT!!!! We drove into the park after dark, so didn't get to see the canyon on our way in. Work up early and rode the bus out to Yaki Point. We took our crazy creek chairs and some warm layers and walked out to a good look out point to wait. It was drizzly and overcast, but we still got the most incredible view (beautiful blues and grays) as the sun came up. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Yaki Point.

It might have been the late stop and great lighting but this was my favorite stop. The canyon goes for miles and my family and I stopped every chance in our car, but you are not able to access this point by car so we took the shuttle over and it was totally worth it. If you get the chance watch the sun set here.
