Lipan Point is one of the overlooks along the Desert Rim Drive (aka East Rim Drive). The point offers a panoramic view from west to east across the Grand Canyon, and there is a sign on the fence about the geologic process at work, noting that the river has cut all the way down to the granite bedrock of the area. One can also glimpse a smudge of whitewater on the Colorado River off in the distance over to the left, at the very bottom of the canyon. Another sign identifies it as Hance Rapid, and it's almost four miles away and is the height of a three-story building. Superlatives seem to fall short when one is trying to describe the Grand Canyon . . . .
When we visited, in late November, it was a clear but extremely windy and bitterly cold day; nevertheless, the view was absolutely worth the stop.

Of all the places we visited at the Grand Canyon, this one will forever stay with me. My husband knows I love sunsets more than anything. We went here to watch one while at the GC and it was perfect. Not too packed, beautiful views, perfect weather. I will never forget it!

Lipan Point, in my opinion, is one of the three excellent viewpoints (the other two are Grandview and Desert View) along the East Rim/Desert View Drive which is accessible by private auto. The view point has lots of space and was not crowded when we visited in the spring. From this viewpoint one can see a lot of the geology of the Grand Canyon including the rock layer known as the Grand Canyon Supergroup which is not observable from most other viewpoints. One can also see the Colorado River as it makes an "S" curve below. This is a nice place for sunset but the next viewpoint to the east, Desert View, is better in my opinion as the canyon walls face west here and come alive with color as the sunsets with the painted desert in the background and the Colorado visible below.

The locals told us this was THE place to go for sunset. When you watch a sunset, the tendency is to watch TOWARD the sun. NOT here. At this point look at where the sun is throwing light against the canyon walls. It moves very quickly but provides some amazing photographic moments. I shot many images of the canyon walks with the setting sun and it was magnificent. Definitely a great spot. Going in winter is cold and standing closer to the rim is windy so if you want to stay and see the views, be prepared and dress well.

Oh how I wished I'd checked out Lipan Point ahead of time during my stay at Grand Canyon.
Lipan Point is off the beaten track and not accessible via shuttle bus and as a result, there aren't many crowds, if any, here.
Visitors can park in the little parking lot and hike a short distance to the lookout point. If you're surefooted and not afraid of heights, you can, very carefully at your own risk, walk out onto the precipice and soak it all in.
Lipan Point would make an amazing spot for sunrise/sunset photographers as you get a full 180 degree panoramic view of the amazing canyon below.
There is a public washroom at this location.
Only general vehicle park pass is required to visit this location.

We were leaving the Grand Canyon to get to a Phoenix business conference, when we asked a ranger for the best view of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Without hesistation he mentioned Lipan Point.
Lipan Point is the next to last vista point of the Grand Canyon along the Desert view trail heading toward the eastern entrance/exit to the Park. We had already viewed the Canyon from various points along the Hermit road and the Grand Canyon Village area.
Lipan Point allows the fullest view of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, as it meanders in an S curve into the Canyon from Lake Powell 50 miles away. While the shadows at sunrise and sunset are dramatic, we've found them to hinder our view of the greenish Colorado River, with the best views of the River almost midday, on a cloudless day in February. Even the clouds throw shadows, and may obscure your views of the River. We were able to distinguish the white rapids in the Colorado River, with the dramatic color contrasts between the river and the surrounding shades of brown cliff landscape.
To reach Lipan Point one must drive some 20 miles from the Grand Canyon village area. It's on the way out to the eastern exit to the Park, between the Tusayan Ruin and Museum, and Desert View-Watchtower. There are bathroom facilities at both of these two surrounding stops, with a restaurant at the Desert View-Watchtower.
BTW the eastern entrance to the Park is far less crowded than the southern entrance to the Park, and is an ideal way to go into the Park from Flagstaff through Cameron, instead of Flagstaff through Williams, without having to endure a lengthy wait at Tusayan, at the Park entrance.

If you know the canyon geological formations and their names, you can see the Colorado River beginning to cut into the Vishnu Schist layer forming the inner canyon gorge. The first visit to Lipan Point it was snowy and foggy and the canyon looked positively prehistoric. A couple days later, Lipan was clear and sunny. . . beautiful. There seem to be more ravens and big birds of prey at Lipan Point than elsewhere. If you're a bird-watcher, plan to stay a while.

The sky was clear, the air was crisp, and the sun appeared on the horizon as scheduled. For the next 45 minutes, the colors became more and more brilliant in the canyon. It has been said many, many times, but sunrise at the Grand Canyon is a truly breathtaking experience. Get up early, and make it happen!

The 20 mile drive from the visitor center to Lipan point is well worth the time. The drive is beautiful, and you are likely to see large elk and deer. We were able to take close-up photos of a massive bull elk, and several large bucks.
Lipan point offers a view that is ridiculous - absolutely breathtaking, no matter what time of the day. Sunrise, mid-day, and sunset....equally gorgeous.
The elevation in this area is about 7,500 feet, so you may feel lightheaded - walk slowly and drink plenty of water!

Can we drive to Lipan Point in our car?
Written May 1, 2021
How long does it take to get to Lipan Point from the south rim entrance? Going there to get married. We booked an Airbnb that said it was thirty minutes away from the SR Entrance in Williams and trying to figure the total estimated time for the drive. We are wanting to go for a sunrise wedding.

I was planning to surprise my fiancé on his birthday but I need some advice should we rent car and drive around or purchase a guide tour ?
Written August 18, 2017
We took a guided bus tour and enjoyed it very much. i recommend going this route as you can focus on the sight seeing and not on the driving and parking.
