The beauty of small stream waterfalls in the Smokies are often highly dependent upon the amount of precipitation that has occured in the days just prior to your hike...so while Henwallow is beautiful when the water is flowing good, it loses a bit of luster in the dry season. Also be aware that this trail can become really slick in... More

Hen Wallow Falls is a 60-foot waterfall in the Cosby area of the park. The hike to the falls is just under 5 miles round trip and moderate in difficulty, so appropriate for most people in reasonable shape. The creek's watershed, however, is small, so best to visit this waterfall after a heavy rain. A spur trail leads from the... More

My wife and I hiked this trail on a rainy day and a light fog was also hovering over the mountains. It had a kind of spooky feel to this hike. It was different then most of the hikes we've done. It had lots of rocks and roots and being in the rain, it was a little slick in spots... More

We hiked part way up the Hen Wallow trail - didn't have time to make the entire round trip. The trail is a steady uphill climb going in with lots of roots and rocks but they add to the beauty of the trail. Very convenient to the Cosby area but not marked until you get into the campground area. We... More

This was a nice quiet hike to the falls. The hike is almost all uphill, until you get to the last .1 mile and then it's a steep walk downhill. The path is mostly roots and rocks but well maintained. The day we hiked it, a bear had dug up bee hive and they were buzzing around and stinging just... More

This was a terrific moderate hike in a quieter section of GSMNP. It's two miles of gradual incline, then a very steep drop down to the waterfalls before returning on the same path. Some exposed roots and a few stream crossings via wooden "bridges", plus mushrooms, butterflies, salamandars, and a snake. Lots of rocks at the waterfalls, which makes for... More

We have hiked a lot of waterfalls in the Smokies, we decided to try Hen Wallow since it's one we'd never seen. The hike was very pretty, but the waterfall was a major disappointment. If you are looking for a big volume waterfall, this is not it! The hike is all uphill on the way, but it's not too bad.... More

We went here knowing it is not as well traveled. Saw maybe 10 others the whole way. Very peaceful. Still quite a challenge in spots but there were areas that were very easy too. The falls were a little small but still nice. Just a little more than 4 miles round trip. There were also 3 bridges made of trees... More

We visited the Hen Wallow falls on our anniversary. The kids had picked it out as it was not too far and not too difficult. We started with a picknic lunch at the Cosby picnic area and started our hike. The last piece of the trail was pretty steep and could be challenging for small kids. Our total hike was... More

Beautiful hike! We started out at 8:00 am sharp in mid July and never saw another person until our return trip after the falls. We loved the solitude. Much less crowded than the other waterfall hikes in the park. The length and difficulty level were perfect for us too. Not too easy and not too short but not too difficult... More
