This is a mostly level graveled trail to the cabin. Takes about 3 or 4 hours round trip. Take water and enjoy the scenery.

McKittrick Canyon is a beautiful place to enjoy the Guadalupe Mountains. The hiking trail is fairly flat and easy to navigate. We did not have time to hike the whole trail, but were surprised at the number of families with small children that were planning...More

This is a wonderful place to hike and if you've got a whole day to enjoy it you will be amazed at the changes in plant life as you hike up the canyon. Even and hour or two will be rewarding. I'm a Texan and...More

Even in the heat of the day, the canyon is incredible in it's history of being so far below water during prehistoric times. The geology itself is worth the visit.

We did this in the fall, years ago. This year we stopped by on an April road trip and hiked to the grotto and back. The maples that make the trail so colorful in the fall were exhibiting spring green leaves about thumbsize. The hike...More

This hike starts out nicely from the McKittrick Canyon visitor's center. The first three miles or so are not challenging and allow you to take in the beautiful canyon around you. Once you reach the Grotto the hike gets difficult. My feet ached for a...More

We visited this March and loved the hike ... more on that in a moment. Some reviewers griped about how hot it was, or how unimpressive the foliage was ... but in November it will not be in bloom! This place is well worth your...More

We hiked the McKittrick Canyon Trail to the Pratt Cabin and then onto the Grotto for a total round-trip distance of almost 7 miles. This took us a total of 4.5 hours, which included a stop for our packed lunch. This hike was at a...More

I try to go to McKittrick as much as I can. Because of the leaves changing, and the hike up to the grotto. I would say if you finished hiking from the highest peak of Texas, and still want to hike without the torture this...More

For the first 2 hours, you are in the canyon, a valley, very flat. Then the trail moves upward into the mountain range and the view gets great. Just do it!
