We did the sunrise!

We decided to see the sunrise, so left our condo in Kahana at 4am. Made it up the mountain by 6a & there were already tons of people - all the spots by the railing were taken. We found a rock to stand on & did so for an hour (it was 41 degrees F), before the sun rose. It... More

We went to watch the sunrise at the crater and it was beautiful but very chilly and crowded. I would suggest leaving a bit early because if you get stuck behind someone slow this could add a lot of time to your drive. Also we did wear warm clothes but I wish I would've brought gloves and maybe a blanket... More

We had done a sunrise at Haleakala 11 years ago (which we loved!) so opted to do the sunset this time. The weather seemed cloudy as we started out but then it cleared up and we had beautiful views. It was very cold and the wind was blowing so hard that we thought it would blow us over. We still... More

We reached at about 5 am and it was freezing cold! (-3 C) we were treated to a stunning display of stars.. every constellation was visible and we lost count of the number of shooting stars we saw! We waited in the chilly wind for the sun to rise and it was totally worth it! Once the sun was visible... More

I think we woke up around 4:00 am and I would definitely recommend anyone thinking of going to go and see it. The reviews that suggested we bring warm clothes were not kidding. I was so thankful we had worn all the warm clothes we brought with us to Maui for this excursion. Waiting outside for the views although cold... More

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Maui. I had been looking forward to it for a couple months. We were not disappointed. The drive up is of course a little sketchy but when you are climbing to 10,023 ft that is to be expected. We did a tour with Maui Astronomy and it was very informative,... More

At 10,034 feet above sea level Maui is COLD! at 12 PM it was 85 degrees and 6 PM at Sunset it was 34 degrees. Dress accordingly! A wonderful experience to be above the clouds, watching the moon rise and the sun set. The morning sunrise get all the crowds and the tour buses and very sleepy drivers trying to... More

Be prepared to rise early, around 4:00am, to arrive on time and park and situate yourself for a good view around the crater. Bring warm clothing! Even on summer mornings it is cold up on top of Haleakala. The morning we arrived there was a local Hawaiian singing to welcome the sun. It was amazingly beautiful to watch the sun... More

I have been up to and hiked through the crater many times and to this day it is one of my favorite places on the island of Maui. I spent the night at one of the cabins and was with a group that had our sleeping gear and food brought in by horse. I love the crater at sunrise and... More
