I went here with my family but it wouldn't let me select this unless children were included. I would recommend this but if you are sensitive to elevation change I will caution you! I have never had an issue until that trip but it was worth it!

This is an early morning trip. We were staying in Kaanapali and left our hotel at 2:30am!! The drive took about 2.5 hours, the last part of the drive is going up a very windy road. Don't forget to book in advance online as they will not let you into the national park for the sunrise without a reservation. You... More

We did this as part of a bicycle tour. I really didn't know what to expect. I knew it was going to be cold, however, I didn't expect it to be this cold. On cloudy days, the sunrise is not perfect. The bicycle ride to the sea was fabulous. Overall, I'm glad I did it once.

Great site to see. However, the elevation or curvy roads caused my son to be puking on the side of the road. The massive amount of bikers seemed to be a bit dangerous, we even saw one sitting on the side of the road after she wrecked her bike. We went at about 10am after deciding we did not want... More

The Haleakala crater is a site that is otherworldly and is really difficult to do justice with photos (as much as we all try). This is something very different to do on the island (and would be anywhere you went). This was one of my favorite activities while we were in Maui. Make sure you dress warmly and I would... More

When visiting Maui in March 2017 we were very excited to drive up to the Haleakala Crater to watch the sunrise. To my great disappointment I discovered the day before we were going to do this that the National Park Service now (as of February 2017) requires a permit to enter the park between 3 AM and 7 AM (in... Amazing view of the sunrise in the mornings, dress warm in layers and cover your skin as it can get very cold up here. As soon as the sun rises you can remove a layer. The drive down is fantastic because everything you couldn't see in the dark is now lite up! You will want to stop multiple times for... More

Must do! We went for the sunrise - after traveling from Halifax we went on our first morning there to make getting up at 3:30 am easier - 9:30 am Halifax time. The climb in the dark was very nice especially near the top. You were looking straight at the moon. The road is well lit and it was no... More

Nice windy drive up Haleakela to the National Park. Quite the change in temperature from sea level up to the 10000+ foot summit. This time we didn't have issues with wind...as sometimes the wind can be very strong at the top. Neat to be there early to see the sun rise...or at least in the early am before the clouds... More

It gets crowded and you'll wind up watching from behind someone if you don't beat the crowds. Bring blankets to wear and sit on, plus a thermos of warm drink. It is quite colder up at almost 10K feet than you experience on the coast. If possible, schedule shortly arriving in Hawaii while you're still acclimating to the time zones.... More
