About
Get up close and personal with a volcano at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Stop by the Kilauea Visitor Center to pick up a map and ask a ranger for their recommendation on the best route. Hike the Kilauea Iki lava field, check out the Nahuku Thurston lava tubes, and drive the Chain of Craters Road. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen, and don’t forget headlamps and binoculars if you’re planning to experience the molten lava’s glow at night. There’s so much to do at this experience of a lifetime—consider extending your visit by booking a stay at the Volcano House Hotel. – Tripadvisor

    A great national Park
Well worth the two hour drive from Kona for a day trip. If we were to come back to Kona I would plan ahead to stay the night in the park at the Volcano House. It is accessible for toddlers from the parking lot. We had lunch in the on-site restaurant with great views of the crater at the volcano house. The magma tube is not to be missed.

    Amazing Experience
It’s a place you don’t want to miss! Go early to avoid crowds! Limited gas station as well so plan and fill tank when you can ! We started with visiting the lava tube - this place has limited parking so go early ! Then we drove across chain of craters road - this has multiple view points for you to explore ! The road sides are full of lava rocks! The road leads to Holei Sea Arch , it has spectacular view of the sea shore rocks ! Then we saw amazing steam vents and smoke coming out at Kilauea visitor center ! This is where you see sulphur deposit and steam venting out ! Must must visit !

    Awesome closeup views of volcanoes!
My husband and I recently visited Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. It was a very well taken care of park! Facilities were clean! Rangers were knowledgeable and helpful! Views were amazing! Highly recommend it if you are interested in volcanoes!

A Trip to This Park is Recommended
Hawaii Volcano NP was so neat. It was not erupting during our visit. The visitor center is a good first stop. A ranger-led tour down to the Kilauea caldera from the visitor center is recommended. Pop-up showers and heavy wind are to be expected so be prepared. The hike through the lava tube is cool and the hike to the Kilauea Iki crater is nice but not accessible (it is a bit of a hike) and leads to a path to walk across the crater. A drive down Chain of the Craters road is neat as the landscape is covered by lava so that is different. We drove to the end to the Holei Sea Arch and then drove back up. There are not a lot of food options in Volcano Village but I recommend the hardware store for drinks and snacks (better selection and prices than the general store),

    Fascinating day
Volcanoes National Park is a fascinating place. New Zealand has a lot of geothermal and volcanic activity but Kīlauea is so different to the volcanoes we have seen before. We walked Sulphur Banks, Crater Rim Trail and Thurston Lava Tube. Such diverse landscape and it was really interesting learning about the 2018 eruption. After about 4 hours of exploring, we were ready for food. We should have tried to get a table at Volcano House because everywhere else in the park had closed at 1pm. I understand it was low season but the part was still FULL of visitors. In Volcano the only place open was Lava Rock Cafe. Service was slow since they were understandably busy and the food was fine, not that we had any other choices. Overall the park is great and we could have explored for longer. The food options clearly need to stay open for longer, even in low season.

    A fun day of driving
Prepare for a full day and start early. We entered the park at 9am. We pulled up to the window, after the car in front of us paid with the staff member, only to find a QR code on the window. It started our trip on a wrong foot because we intended to buy a national park pass, but that wasn’t an option on the link the QR code took us. We skipped the visitor center to head straight to the lava tube. We had no problems finding a parking spot, but any later in the day and parking would have been hard to find. We had great timing and didn’t run into any parking issues. I’m glad we saved the visitors center until the end of our visit. We used the Shaka app and really enjoyed the history, stop suggestions, and stories. Lots of porta-potties and out houses along the route. Bring lots of snacks and water!

    View into Life of volcano
I enjoy this different kind of national park. It is a 2 hour drive from Kona and 45 minutes from Hilo. The visitor center has a movie, gift shop and exhibits. Thurston Lava tube is a highlight. Jaggard museum is fenced off as it is being demolished. I like Chain of Craters Road which snakes by several past lava flows and striking scenery to the ocean. However the main attraction, Holei Sea Arch is not accessible. At this time there are no active flows. Best view of the crater is Volcano House.

    Incredible views of nature's power
One day really isn't enough to spend here but if that's all you have, it's definitely worth a visit! Not sure if this is typical but it was incredibly windy when we were there. Like blow you off your feet windy. We hiked to see the pteryoglyphs which was very interesting. It's an uneven walk about 0.75 miles and the wind made it even more challenging. My elderly mother sat that one out.

A wonderful way to become absorbed in creation all around us.
This was a wonderful experience, including the steam vents, and views of the volcano crater. We took the road to the right and explored the trails and the many viewing areas. We went to the end of the road, and at 4000' elevation it was 40 degrees with very high winds. So bring a coat to be able to savor the views there for more than a minute. Signage was rather weak in some areas, so there was often a coin flip as to which path to take. Still full stars for this !

    Absolutely amazing experience
Went and experienced this amazing park. Highly recommend a guided tour then do a helicopter ride after. Walking on the lava rock and going in the tubes is such a cool experience. The different weather throughout the park is a cool experience too.

We were taken here on a tour called the Hawaii Volcano Park Shared Shore Excursion by the owner, Gil. Please note that you are taken up to the mountain, and I believe the elevation was around 4000 feet. The temperature up there was about 58 degrees around 9am. We came unprepared as that is a bit chilly for us. Our tour guide had extra jackets and could not be more thankful. I highly recommend having someone very familiar with the park drive you around. I would have easily lost my sense of direction there. Find a steam vent and stand next to it. It feels like if you are in a sauna. Feels great when it's chilly. When we were there, it was rather drizzly, so pack a rain jacket or umbrella to be safe. So many great things to see. Our guide was showing us lots of places where lava had flowed and stayed with some flows from the mid 1970's. It was a neat place to see given our limited time on the island because of our cruise.

This is still an excellent experience, despite a number of changes and closures within the park that have occurred over the past couple of years. It was of added interest to see the changes in the park since the last eruptions. We drove around from Kona, so it was a full day trip, and we had a great time. The weather was perfect, and we had a really lucky day finding parking spots that just seemed to open up whenever we needed one - makes for a pretty stress free day when you’re in the midst of the large number of people that visit the park every day. The ranger staff were very helpful and informative. The Chain of Craters drive is well worth the time it takes to drive to the end and back. My only grumble about the whole process is that you are required to purchase a seven day pass for $30 to get into the park. I can appreciate that lots of people come back over several days, but it would be nice to have the option of just purchasing admission for a single day.

Volcanoes NP is stunning even in its starkness. Easy to access from Hilo on down while a drive from the north and west sections of the island. We had the benefit of a lifetime NPS pass so we didn't have to worry of how we necessarily needed to use our time as we didn't have to visit only once. It is great to just pull off at one of the wide-enough areas and go exploring. Of course one needs to be careful as the territory undulates and the lava rock is sharp. The Nahuku-Thurston Lava Tubes were closed during our visit in November 2019 which was unfortunate but we did access the one at Bird Park though it is not recommended you do so. The Holei Sea Arch is a sight to behold as the ocean crashes against the cliffs. Check out the designs in the smooth lava as you traverse down to the cliff tops overlooking the ocean. Take the time here, since you are parked, to continue on the gravel path and walk to the lava flow that you can walk on as it seems to go on forever. On the way back on Chain of Craters Rd if you're up to another trek over and around rocks and boulders check out the Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs. Here on an elevated boardwalk you will see these ancient artworks, unfortunately, you will also see some vandalizing as well. We came back another day to visit the Visitors Center, the Steam Vents and the Steaming Bluff. These areas were much more crowded. If you drove here you can pick up gas in the Kilauea Military Camp where their gas prices are excellent and only bettered by the Costco in Kona. We did not venture on any trails and certainly there is much more that could be explored. We hope to be back for more adventure.

I don't think you need to read reviews of the park itself.. so instead I will give you tips. We did the unthinkable and got up in the middle of the night to make it to the view spot for lava by 4:30am. We saw the glow and the sunrise with only a handful of people. Dress warm it is cold and windy and may rain. It is a easy one mile hike to the viewing rimj. We then basically had the park to ourselves until around 9am when it got a bit busier. We hiked a total of 12 miles on various trails. If you do what I suggest and go before sunrise do dress in layers because by 11am you will start to get warm. My favorite trail was Kilauea iki trail which takes you around the crater and then down and across the bottom of it. Bring a hat and plenty of water because if the sun is not covered by clouds it will get toasty. We also drove the chain of Craters down to the sea. The sea arch is OK very windy and you can only view from a distance. The petroglyph trail was also nice but walking over all that lava and in the wind is exhausting. After we felt we saw all there was we then went to Kona for the afternoon. We picked up dinner and headed back to the volcano for a sunset and night glow sighting ( since we were staying in KONA) We parked in the closest lot to walk to the lava viewing (can't remember the name) we got there around 6 pm ( the sun set around pm) the parking lots started to fill up fast. We ate dinner in the car then walked to the area for sunset. I was shocked at the throngs of people already there. We stayed for about an hour 8pm had our fill and left. I totally would recommend doing the EARLY 4am view instead of the night time. You don't have the crowds of people then you have the rest of your day for the park then drive to the black sand beach and take a nap!.

We drove 2+ hours from Kona to see the visitor center (during daylight hours) and the red glow from the lava after sunset. Sunset happens around 6:30 PM. The rangers told us that the best viewing was at the end of the road. Since that is where most people head, there was a traffic jam with the park rangers directing traffic. We waited (on the main road) about 20 minutes before we were allowed into the parking lot (where another ranger directed us to an open parking spot). We walked the short distance to the crater's edge. We did NOT see any red glow in the sky (steam or clouds), just some white and gray. We were disappointed. When we were here in 2014, we saw lots of red. Looking at the NPS webcam of the crater, one can see that there is not much red on the lava lake.

Based on the traffic we saw, many people come just for the viewing after sunset.

The visitor center was a bust. The store was open, but not the museum. The store closed at 5 PM.

The lava tube is also closed.

We have had much better visits in years past.

Just in time for Xmas, Pele decided to demonstrate her power and force with a new eruption at the Kileaua crater :)). Very exciting for kama’aina and visitors alike!

Some tips for viewing this remarkable phenomenon:

If you want to see the volcanic activity at dusk, it’s best to arrive and enter the Park a couple hours early.

There’s two ways to access the viewpoint closest to the ongoing eruption — at the northern end of the Crater Road, where there’s a small parking lot + extended wait time to get a spot as directed by NPS staff (2 hours or longer, then a short 200 foot walk to the overlook), or parking at the secondary lots near the visitor center then walking for several miles (r/t) on the paths leading to/from the overlook. (Note that there can be a considerable wait to exit this secondary parking area after you’ve returned to your vehicle.)

Bring a jacket if you’re visiting Kileaua at dusk, as it can be windy, chilly, and/or rainy!

Don’t go beyond the barriers at the crater overlook — the adjacent cliff is very high, and the edge is unstable = extremely hazardous!

Have an enjoyable and safe visit to see Pele in action :))

Amazing to think about how these volcanoes were made.

We flew into Hilo and stayed 3 nights at an airBnB nearby in Volcano and was able to visit quite a lot of the park with 2 full days. This included hiking across one of the crater floors, and a couple other trails as well as driving to the ocean seeing all of the craters along the main crater road. There were a couple more trails we could've done with a third day and if we had gotten up real early and pushed you might be able to get a good experience with one full day.

(Hike the Kīlauea Iki trail and lava tube, drive the road and then see the big caldera.) The park is always open I believe so you can come early morning. There weren't any current lava flows at this time, but still worth seeing and there may be more in the future.

Volcano was a great place to stay for this trip as we were less than 10 minutes from the park and there were few crowds before 930. Overall, the park didn't get real crowded when we went but Kilauea Iki parking lot did fill up around that time. Our only issue with staying in Volcano was that the restaurants closed very early and there wasn't a town center. We loved our airbnb in the woods but for us would try Hilo where restaurants were still open after a longer day in the park. In July the temperatures was in the 60s and had light rain at times.

We bought the annual pass to all of the national parks for $80. It's is a great deal if you'll visit any other parks within the next 12 months. Other discounts may also be available.

Travelled there with my parents. On the day we visited it was raining which kept the crowds down. There is no lava but plenty of geological sites including historical lava flows, calderas and active calderas (with plenty of steam vents). This is the place to go when you are at the big Island.

We used Shaka Guide App (well worth it) - as our guide while we visited the Volcano National Park! We arrived late afternoon; entrance fee is $30 for one car. We were totally underdressed as we were returning from a day at the beach:) It was 14 degrees Celsius!

We spent 3 hours in the park and really enjoyed the views, the stories and the difference in temperatures from summit to sea level (14 to 27 degrees Celsius).

Our park entry was valid for 7 days; therefore we returned a few days later with warmer clothing, hiking shoes and a lunch and spent a full day exploring the many trails in the park! We walked in a lava tube, hiked to a crater, participated in a guided walk to the petroglyphs with a park ranger - great job Mike!

You cannot come to the Big Island and not plan a day at the park! And plan to watch the informative videos offered at the Visitor Centre.

We had a great visit to the visitor center, main viewing spots at the Volcano House and other stops on the Craters trail. My wife wanted to see the petroglyphs near the end of that 16 mile drive dropping a few thousand feet (good road but definitely hold the wheel with both hands!). We'd read there was a boardwalk to the site but when arriving found out it was a .7 mile walk through a fairly rigorous lava boulder path. About .5 mile in my wife lost her footing and fell, dislocating her finger (we found that out at the ER hours later). We were wearing non slip good shoes going very slow but highly advise anyone over 55 especially with weaker knees/hips/ankles to skip that stop and feel the park service needs to better advise only experienced hikers to do this one. The rest of the park was interesting but this wrecked our experience, what could have been one of our highlights to a multi week island visit.
