The loop is about 6 miles, with the mine about 2 miles in. Actual mine isn't super impressive, but the hike is a good one. We did see a big horn sheep on the mountain, which was awesome. Highly recommend this hike, I would repeat it on my next visit to Joshua Tree. Six mile loop took us about 3... More

This definitely wasn't my favorite hike, it was long, dusty and not much to look at until you get to the mine. If your looking for scenery, I would suggest skipping this hike.

I'll be the first to say I'm out of shape. Could stand to lose about 100 lbs and have a BMI of 4000 or so but I can still run 1/4 mile carrying 25lbs of gear for work so I'm not totally dead yet. I had hiked this trail about 15 years ago, when I was much younger, lighter, yada... More

Summary for the longer 6+ mile loop trail: --get to the parking lot at the trailhead early. By the time we got back to the lot it was full and there's no overflow parking --requires actual hiking boots, though trail running shoes might be ok. --loop trail goes through a lot of sand, which slows things down somewhat --many wildflowers... Hiked to the Lost Horse Mine. Beautiful trail amid hills with great views of the park and surrounding area. A few other people on the trail, but not busy. Only issue was we couldn't use the bathroom at the trailhead because there was a wasp nest in it!

This is an easy hike...relatively flat and only about 4 miles. Past some great scenery ending at lost horse mine. This is a relatively mild hike that anyone can do without any particular strength or conditioning. The mine is so neat. Imagine how they hauled and then installed the mining equipment...And of course, hauled out the product. Lots of fun... More

Its a 6.5 mile loop. It takes you around and past several mining sites, a cabin with only a chimney and rusted bed frame and finally lost horse mine. Trail is generally easy to follow but can get kinda sketchy in a couple places. Just pay attention and walk another 20 ft or so and you'll find trail markers

The hike is pretty basic, it is an out an back hike - you CAN do a loop and take the 6.2 mile hike, but there is not much to see so we skipped it. The stone crushing machine was cool though but the mine shafts were closed. Dogs are NOT permitted on any trails in Joshua Tree park, but... More

Really enjoyable hike. If you begin the trek heading clockwise, it is easier than the other way (less up hill). This hike was rated challenging, coming from Alberta mountains I personally would describe it as an easy 10km hike. You get to see the mine early on in the hike, second half is a bit more boring but excellent Joshua... More

A four mile (two miles each way) hike of medium difficulty. Wonderful views on the way. Unfortunately the mine at the end of the trail is in disrepair, although I believe that an application has been made to be listed as a historical monument so that federal funds will be made available for restoration and preservation.
