The hike was fairly easy. There were not many people hiking on the day we went. It was such an interesting sight to see the bubbling springs. We did see a bear on our way there and just moved on quickly.

With Bumpass Hell closed, Devil's Kitchen offers the only trail with views of mudpots, geysers and steam vents. The last 3 miles of the road leading to the trailhead is cinder. We drove it with a sedan and did not have any trouble as long...More

We decided to do this hike with our children (youngest is 8) as Bumpass Hell was closed and we were staying in nearby Chester. We started at 10am on a hot day, a lot of the hike was in the shade along fairly dusty paths....More

We stayed at Drakesbad Guest Ranch and this is one of the main hikes that takes off from there. It was a good hike without being too strenuous and the views were incredible. I was worried we'd make the long hike and see one spout...More

Devil's Kitchen was the first trail we did during our visit to Lassen Park. It's not a bad trail but the reason I only rate it as average is because Bumpass Hell is by far the better option if you want to see the parks...More

I make the walk to Devil's Kitchen every 10 years or so and it never fails to disappoint me. The trail itself winds through the Drakesbad meadows and then gently climbs through mostly evergreen forest. A fascinating volcanic feature in this volcanic park. Take water!...More

We were hopeful that the big snowmelt that kept the main park road closed would also mean more than average water at Devil's Kitchen in late July. Alas that was not the case. We took this trail as an alternate to the closed Bumpass Hell...More

Stayed in Chester specifically to visit Lassen Volcanic Park. The trail we were going to do (Bumpass) was still closed because of the huge amount of snow still present at high levels. So we drove into Warner Valley. Be careful, the road turns becomes unpaved...More

Due to colder than expected temps and a hard winter, we were hiking over 3-4' of snow at times. There are a few areas where it is difficult to tell which way the trail goes so we made arrows out of sticks to make sure...More

As a geothermal feature the Devil's Kitchen is a good alternative to Bumpass Hell. The Devil's Kitchen is a shorter hike and substantially less crowded. (Of course, neither site compares to Yellowstone.) To get to the trailhead, you do need to travel an unpaved road...More
