I am extremely active and have an athletic frame. I usually work out 12-14 hours a week with running, boot camp, insanity, biking...etc. I found this hike to be one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It didn't matter that it was steep and long, I just wasn't prepared for the amount of rock climbing. It was... More

It was a cold rainy day in late April. The fog was so thick we couldn't see anything beyond 100 feet. The rocks were so slippery that any misstep could spell disaster. But it was phenomenal. Highly recommended in any weather.

Tired, but worth it ... take lots of water, a snack and some good climbing shoes and please do not go back, get to the end and enjoy the trip and the view.

Beautiful ~9.5mile hike, with a gorgeous scenery up top. It can be quite challenging at times- pretty steep at first and lots of sliding down big rocks and finding your way out in the big rock scramble, but very worth it! A fun challenge and a great day out. We saw lots of small children as well. We did it... More

The hike up and down old rag was totally worth it! We hiked up clockwise, so didn't hit the rock scramble till the way down. The sacramble was ridiculously fun and really challenging. Great teamwork as our teenagers helped guide us all through the challenges. We squeezed, slid, scrunched, and crawled our way through. Sometimes picking up the trail blue... More

I can say we did this once in our lives. Took all day, bring lots of water and snacks/lunch. Breathtaking views. Need to be in excellent physical shape since some rocks you have to climb over.

Be prepared to do a lot of scrambling over rocks. This is probably the most difficult hike I have ever done. But, the view at the top is absolutely worth it. If you want to hike the entire circuit make sure you are in good shape. If you don't want to do the rock scramble you can hike up the... More

The summit of Old Rag Mountain is unique because of its geology and its location. This bald area of huge boulders is really the eroded away root of an ancient mountain that once stood several times higher than the Rocky Mountains of Colorado do today. Old Rag also "stands a little apart" from the rest of the Blue Ridge Mountain... More

We went on a busy weekend morning. It made our hike a little slower, but it's nice to help or have help in a couple spots.

Climbing Old Rag is a pleasant day hike for some, a rite of passage for others...regardless, a trip to the summit offers fantastic views of the Shenandoah Valley. The total distance of the hike from parking lot and back is just over nine miles. If you do not dawdle and if the trails and rock scrambles are not crowded, you... More
