We took this hike in the late afternoon. It was 1.8 miles to the summit, so 3.6 miles round trip. It took us almost two hours to reach the top, but less than one hour to hike back down. It is absolutely uphill all the...More

There are two parking for this trail. I parked at Spring Meadow parking (mile 33,5) which is a shorter distance than the other one (this one is 2.7 miles) Parking is very small, probably 8-9 cars but it was a half empty because it was...More

I grew up hiking SNP and went back the first weekend in October 2018. Still beautiful. Still crowded on weekends with ill prepared people hiking in sneakers and work out clothes, not carrying maps or water and asking how much further to the top. I...More

We hiked up to Mary's Rock from Panorama at Thornton Gap. The hike is a little under 4 miles round trip along the Appalachian Trail and moderate in difficulty. Hiking to the summit, it's all uphill for 2 miles, but a moderate ascent with no...More

My son and I began our hike from the Meadow Spring parking area. The trailhead is across Skyline Drive from the parking area which is at milepost 33.5. The first .6 of a mile is a moderate ascent to the Appalachian Trail. Along the way...More

The main road that goes through Shenandoah National park provides great opportunities for incredible views of the mountain range. I highly recommend that you take the drive!

This is a great trail for a day hike. A few tips: Unless things have changed recently, you can park at the trailhead without a park permit. To do so, you pass under the Skyline Drive bridge on US 211 (coming from Washington) and turn...More

The uphill grade is rewarded with a scenic view at Mary's Rock. Be sure to have enough water. Returning downhill is quicker but requires careful footing.
