We took a wine tour of the Chateau de Pravins, outside of Bourgos in the Beaujolais wine district of France. This tour was part of an excursion offered by Viking cruises, so do not know if other tours are available to the winery. We visited the Chateau de Pravins and learned about the types of vines and wines the chateau produced. The buildings were erected in the 14th century and are still in use. The current owner is a middle-aged woman who is the last member of the family remaining standing and seems to relish her role as wine maker. We toured the ancient barns that now house modern wine pressing and fermenting machines. She took us into her cave to taste the Beaujolais Nouveau, in addition to several other types of wines that she produces. We bought some wines, including a bottle of Cremont that was our favorit, hints of fruit, sparkling, and sweeter than champagne, with a delicious flavor we enjoyed.

The chateau is a medieval farm complex around a central courtyard, so don’t get carried away with the idea of Loire Valley castles. It is incredible to walk around this chateau, its grounds and vineyards, and its winery and cave, to know that it is over 400 years old and still going strong. And producing some incredible wines! The owner speaks only French, but our translator shared Isabelles sense of humor and hard work effort, a delightful older lady. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Chateau de Pravins, and enjoyed our wines during the rest of our trip through France!

Chateau de Pravins is a small property in the Beaujolais region of Burgundy which produces and bottles several lovely wines. It is basically a farm, an agricultural entity, not presumptuous but honest and sincere. The owner lives on the property, conducts the tours and pours wines at the tasting. She even invited several of us into her home. What a delightful person...! We felt very welcomed and were impressed with her warmth and respect. We were her guests, and she was as pleased to receive us as we were to be there.

Her wines are fresh, harmonious and clean. We particularly liked her Beaujolais Villages and Bourgogne blanc. The Cremant de Bourgogne was a little rough; it is difficult to compete with Champagne. These wines are not imported to the USA. It is not known whether they would "travel" well. Some of these wines are fragile and appear to change when exposed to the motion, vibration and changes in temperature involved in transportation.

Chateau de Pravins is open year-round. A light lunch is offered if requested for a modest charge; the visitor is asked to call and make reservations. It is easily accessible and is a lovely place to visit.

A persoanlized tour of a small, family winery in the Beaujolais region. Modest by most standards, the friendliness and casual setting make this a memorable spot to visit. The tasting room and wine-making operation are all part of the owners home which make it an intimate experience. The wines for sale are organic and tasty. Call ahead for reservations and availability.
