Introduction

Danson House, which is a sparkling jewel of Georgian splendour set within the beautifully panoramic Danson Park, is truly a multi-cultural house. Now run by Bexley Heritage Trust (which also runs the nearby Hall Place), Danson House was constructed around 1766 and despite being built by the typically English gentleman Sir John Boyd as a home for himself and his young bride placed conveniently close to London, it has its roots firmly rooted in the overseas exploration and trade which typified the 18th century. Indeed, John Boyd was able to fund the construction of Danson House using funds which he had raised through his slave-run sugar plantations in the West Indies and through his position as Vice-Chairman of the East India Company. Furthermore, despite being designed by the Englishman Sir Robert Taylor, the interior design of the house perpetuates the house's international theme with many pieces of art from across the world being on display and with the oriental style of Chinoiserie featuring heavily in the wall prints. Today the house has been meticulously restored by Bexley Heritage Trust so that it now provides us with a direct window into the sumptuousness and the exotic of Georgian life.

Highlights of the tour include the octagonal salon which is resplendent when bathed in sunlight which shines in through the windows and is reflected off of a series of mirrors, the dining room which is adorned with a total of 17 original paintings, the elegant stairwell with its decorative roof and the library which contains a rare organ designed by George England. New to 2014, free audio guides will also be available to further enhance your tour of the house. In addition, enjoy a relaxing stroll around the Danson House gardens which were originally designed by a protege of the famous landscape gardener Capability Brown and after your walk why not pop into the tea room to reinvigorate yourself with a selection of hot and cold beverages and snacks including sumptuous cream teas and moist cakes?(Please note that on certain occasions the tea room may be closed to the public in order to cater for special events - please check the Danson House website or call in advance to check whether the cafe will be open on the day you intend to visit).

In addition, to hosting a series of varied and fascinating events throughout the year, several of the rooms within Danson House are also available for private hire to provide an elegant backdrop to your wedding, birthday, corporate event or any sort of private function.

Both the lower and upper floors of Danson House are fully accessible to wheelchair users (with the sole of exception of the Victorian kitchen) with disabled toilet facilities and disabled parking bays also being available. Furthermore, there is one manual wheelchair available to hire for free. Guide dogs are also welcome and carers accompanying a disabled visitor will be admitted free of charge. Touch tours are also available upon request. If you have any further special requirements please contact us in advance of your visit so that we can do our upmost to assist you.

Opening Times and Admission Fees

Danson House is open Sunday to Thursday from April 1 to October 31. Opening times beyond these dates are not available. The house is open from 12:00pm to 5:00pm - last admission is 4:30pm. The admission fee to Danson House costs £8 per adult, £6 for a concession and is free for under 16 year olds, although they must be accompanied. National Trust members and English Heritage members also enjoy half price admission (although only with individual not group tickets). In addition, Friends of Bexley Heritage Trust, Annual Pass Holders and National Art Pass holders go free! Guided tours can also be pre-booked for a minimum of 12 people with a cost of £7.50 per person.

From 1st April 2014, the tea room will be open every day from 12:00pm to 5:00pm with last orders being taken at 4:30pm.

Now I'm a bit of a man's man - to this day I only cry a little bit when Chandler proposes to Monica on 'Friends' - but this place is really, really good. Good selection of cakes, cookies, hot snacks and hot/soft drinks, all made on the premises. Nice surroundings and cutlery, and amazing staff. They sell alcohol too, so... More

I recently visited Danson House for an afternoon tea for a birthday treat. We had the luxury package which included any teas or coffees we wanted. Sandwiches a scone each and a big slice of cake of our choice. I cannot recommend it more. The decor was lovely and very pretty with a lovely feel to it. The sandwiches were... More

This Manor House within what is now Danson Park has been restored over the last twenty or so years. Not really ideal for young kids but adults with a pet chant for local history will I'm sure enjoy it. Being just across the way from its stable block which is now The Stables pub and restaurant which I'd also recommend.

Went for a Sunday morning walk, we came across a sign outside Danson House 'Open Day' so decided to go and find out about the history of it all. I've lived in the area all my life and although been a frequent visitor to the park never had the opportunity to visit the house before and so glad we did,... More

We heard that the house was open on Saturday 4th February, so we decided to have a day out. On arrival we found it was only open to people who would like to get married there. We told the people on the reception how far we had travelled. They said we have a couple of guides spare, so one of... More
