These carvings were made in the side of mountains beginning in the 6th century and continuing into the 11th. Given the length of time they have been exposed to the elements, they are incredibly well preserved, many with paint still clearly visible. The workmanship is exceptional, especially the Guanyin at Pilu, an iconic rendering of which serves as Anyue's county/city logo. The problem for most travelers is that the carvings are widely distributed and require transport for convenient access. Anyue is 2.5 hours from Chengdu. I hired a car and driver for 1300RMB, left Chengu at 6:30 and returned at 21:00. We covered four sites with only a short break for a bowl of noodles for lunch: Pilu, Huayen, Thousand Buddha, and Yuanjue. There are at least two more sites, but there was not enough light to get to them. The sites were largely deserted in winter.

I took the bus from chengdu to get here. The issue with making it a day trip is that the ride one-way takes 3.5 hours and the sites are spread out. This limited me to what i could visit since the other sites showed they were about an extra 1 - 1.5 hours away. I ended up taking a public bus and walking to the yuanjue cave, located in the "cave of enlightenment scenic area".

After a nice steep 15 minute walk we finally made it ti the entrance to the caves. At first, you don't see much until you get in front of the gigantic and impressive cliff;
These buddhist sculptures and carvings were carved out of the mountain in the beginning of the 6th century until the 11th. They are well preserved and still show colors.
We loved the elegant style of the Bodhisatva position, clothes and jewelry. We loved the back caves with their most intimate atmosphere. A must see excursion !

Incontournable !

The carving are very well preserved and in stunning condition. It's in Anyue County in East SiChuan, so it's not the easiest place to get to. We took a private car and although the journey was straightforward, some of the roads were in really bad condition.
