A wonderful place to buy handmade items, not only quilts and jams. The house is so interesting and Mona is a super interesting person to talk with. Lots of relics in the house which were displayed with love. Always good to support local artists and crafts people. You will be glad you stopped in here, even if just for a look around the house.

This quirky little curiosity - a saltbox house, a quilt and handcraft gallery and shop, and a little family museum - was right up my street, and a seriously delightful place to visit on a very wet afternoon. And after a really underwhelming ‘free’ tour of the Fogo Island Inn that morning (if you can call seeing two public rooms, a stairwell and a passageway a ‘tour’), it was great to see a bit of the ‘real’ Fogo Island: a saltbox house, its industry, its community, its heritage and its history!

Here’s what I really enjoyed about this place, nestled in a sublimely picturesque spot overlooking the water in Joe Batt’s Arm:

1. I got to see inside a traditional saltbox house, a family home which dates back to the early 1900s. I’m a lover of local / vintage / country architecture, and a bit of an amateur photographer, so it was great to see this aspect of local culture, history and family life.
2. The museum element of the business, the Hart House Museum, was a joy: whilst small, it's filled to the rafters with so many interesting pieces of furniture and household items, bric-a-brac, old photos, old tools used by local fishermen, and vintage items of clothing. What a little history lesson!
3. There’s some beautifully handcrafted items on display, and for sale: full-sized patchwork quilts, baby quilts, quilted wall hangings, aprons, carry bags, place mats, floor mats and knitted goods, as well as a larder filled with local homemade jams and preserves, and homemade chocolates. If you’re looking for a local keepsake to take home, this is your place!

Both Mona and her sister (Nona?) were there to answer questions; they provided lots of interesting information about the local area and the history of the house. Thank you for a lovely place to visit, and for your helpful and informative conversation.

Just before you leave, stand for a moment on the front porch of the saltbox house and take in the glorious view of this corner of Fogo Island. Breathe, and relax, for this is Fogo Island at its best!

Love this family. They even offered to babysit! Charming look into a local historic home with beautiful local crafts - mostly quilts. Perfect stop for gifts and peeking at vintage wall paper and linoleum floors.

We entered the building to the enticing smell of baking bread. Perhaps this and the good reviews on Trip Advisor led us to expect more than the museum actually delivered. The exhibits were not displayed in a comprehensive or pleasing way and the quilts were quite ordinary compared to many I have seen around Newfoundland. Really happy with my partridgeberry jam though!

I've admired Mona's quilts on several trips. She has a great appliqué style and has developed her own patterns featuring icebergs, punts and fishing stages, easily seen through the front window of this house. I'm guessing the house, like many on Fogo Island is probably 100 years old. Each room has either antiques on display or mats, quilting, knitting or bottled items. Bottled items are jams made with local berries and preserved by canning.
Mona's patterns beautifully represent Fogo Island, particularly Joe Batt's Arm and the pot holders are my favorite souvenir item with the punts embroidered.

Sharing the story of the house and islanders life was interesting. Buy the Partridgeberry Jam. I thought I knew jams but this stuff is amazing!

The lady who owns this place is a descendant of the former owner. The inside of the house might be a bit shabby, but it holds a collection of interesting objects that is unique to Newfoundland which I found very interesting and it added to my store of memories of Fogo Island. Here you can buy beautiful handmade quilts and jams. We bought some Partridge Berry Jam which was delicious...especially on a PB & Jam sandwich. The view from across the house is stunning which includes the red house of stilts that is featured on many Newfoundland brochures with all the colourful dories.

The quilting tradition is a long and honored one on the island and the work is first class. You can purchase local jams and condiments as well. We bought embroidered Puffin placemats which our bird-watcher friends enjoyed during a recent dinner.

You are not going to a curator type museum. This is an old family home with all kinds of old Nick knacks, tools, kitchen implements, family furniture and so on. It's nothing fancy but the owners are friendly and will chat about anything you want to know. BIG BONUS: the homemade jams and relishes for sale which are delicious and very reasonably priced.
