This is a Must for Louise Penny, Chief Inspector Gamache fans. The recontour (guide-Lynda) was a veteran and the trainee (Jean-Luc) was actually an Eastern Townships local, well versed on the sites and roads. They took us to all the locations listed on the tour brochure. They spent oodles of time explaining the connection between the sites, the Gamache books, and the local history. I was blown away by the 5 Star Plus Manor Hovey, the Abbey, the Knowlton Museum and fell in love with the churches, cheeses and bakery goodies. Then there was my fav: the Lac Brome Books book store. Where if luck is with you, you may see Ms. Penny or her puppy. If not, you'll be able to soak up a real book store with real book store owners Deny, Lucy, and be sure to pet Watson, their dog. The tour ended with wine and cheese (local, of course) at the home of the Three Pines Tour operators, Gillis and Louise, Their hospitality and conversation was gracious and lively. The whole day was pure joy.

This tour was fantastic!! My adult daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed all the scheduled tour events, as well as the extra surprises/details provided by Louise and Gilles. Our raconteur, Lynda, was wonderful. She was a wealth of local knowledge, not just teaching us about the history of the area and locations and inspirations from the books, but also providing details about Louise Penny’s involvement in the community. The 9-hour tour was well-paced, so we still had the energy to socialize informally with our new tour friends for another several hours that evening! We highly recommend this excellent tour!!

4 women who first met in 1965 took a road trip from Philadelphia to Quebec , Canada . Our annual trip this year focused on the fictional town of “Three Pines” in the eastern townships of Quebec and featured in the 18 books by FANLouise Penny, a Canadian murder mystery writer. Our book club loved these books. The “ Three Pines Tour” was excellent. Lynda, our guide, was friendly , knowledgeable and being a fan herself she was as passionate as we were about these books and the towns, pastry shops, general store, churches, museums, manors , book stores and food. We loved this tour from the comfort of our van and all the places we visited. The characters in the books by now are like family members and the tour brought it all to life. The tour more than met our expectations thanks to Lynda.

Six of us retired teachers loved staying at the Hillhouse. Our delightful hosts Louise and Gill treated us royally and were very kind to plan other events for us while we were there such as a winery tour. We enjoyed a Three Pines tour with our guide extraordinaire Patricia St. Onge. She was very knowledgeable about all things related to Louise Penny and her books but also the beauty and history of the Eastern Township! And she had a wonderful sense of humor!! How lucky were we? Very lucky and grateful!

This tour was so much fun, especially for Louise Penny fans! The area is just beautiful, the stops were well thought out, and the tour guide was great! Patricia knew historical information as well as how the location was related to Louise's books, and she had us laughing much of the time! Even if you don't know the books, the tour was still amazing.

Our recontuer Patricia was an enthusiastic guide and knowledgeable about the Penny books. We were able to gain an appreciation how location inspires and informs the stories. We were utterly charmed by little grocery store, the Hovey Manor and the Boulagerie. The citron tart was absolutely heavenly. The Abby was my favorite location. The only thing I would mention is that Patricia needs a portable microphone.

This tour was the centerpiece of our Quebec trip, and I was very nervous as the leader of the travel friend pack. No worries! Patrice was an excellent tour guide and very friendly and knowledgeable. She’s a local and very friendly—-fun and laughter and an overall jolly good time with Gamache and Reine-Marie and Ruth and Myrna and Gabrie.

It was wonderful!

Where to start ... we left our hotel (in downtown Montreal) at 6 a.m. to venture eastbound on Autoroute 10 and arrived at Hill House B&B at 7:30. Met our hosts, Louise and Gilles, then our guide, Lynda, at 8, and we’re off!

Over the course of the next eight hours, we visited the inspiration for A Beautiful Mystery (L'Abbaye de Saint-Benoit-du-Lac); the village of Lake Memphremagog (for the general store and Saint Thomas Church); Manor Hovey (for lunch); Knowlton (for Jane's painting and Brome Lake Books); and Sutton (for absolutely mouthwatering delicacies).

Throughout the tour, Lynda recounted tales that wove these sites into the world of Three Pines, and we realized, as we returned to Montreal after 4 p.m., that we'd experienced a once-in-a-lifetime event that was nothing less than magical!

The Louise Penney Three Pines Tour was well worth the 5 hour trip from Boston, VRBO rental, and cost! Any Three Pines fan will thoroughly adore being submerged in the familiar surroundings, delicious fare, and character “secrets.” Not a Three Pines fan? This adventure made a visit to the Eastern Townships so special. Best Tour Guide ever Patricia picked up the five of us at our rental at 8 am in the very cool white van with the Three Pines logo on the door. Patricia showed us some key Three Pines locations, treated us to scones, and then whisked us to the Saint-Gilbert Monastery, the setting of “A Beautiful Mystery.” After a brief tour, we were enchanted at the 11:00 am service during which the monks sang their beautiful song, and we purchased the chocolate covered blueberries in the gift shop that we read about in the novel. We then arrived at the Manor Bellechasse, featured in “The Murder Stone,” the unbelievable manor where the Gamaches were celebrating their anniversary when they stumbled upon a murder; we had an amazing lunch and learned some history of the building. The journey continued to the Old Hadley House: we saw the location that inspired the General Store and visited the museum where we viewed the picture of Jane’s mural that appeared in the movie Fair Day. The tour concluded with warm baguette, local cheeses, and sweet wine at Le Pleasant Hotel & Cafe where we were greeted warmly by their staff. And the highlight for me was visiting the Knowlton Bookstore and meeting Muggins!! Louise Penney was not there herself, but her dog was relaxing with store owners who greeted us warmly and helped us locate amazing gifts. Patricia’s expertise gave us some great details about Knowlton as well as answered lingering questions from the novels. She gave us great tips for the rest of our short vacation here and promised to visit us when she travels to Boston in the near future. Highly recommend this tour and absolutely love Patricia!!
