Got the builders in

Read about the Cthedral in my guide book and looked forward to visiting. Unfortunately when I arrived I found it is closed for renovation.

We walked up to here after reading about it in the guide book we had however it was under repair when we got there and although the doors were open it didn't feel right to go indoors. The surrounding graveyard had plenty of opulent tombs and we did see a local guy making himself very comfy here. After leaving here... More

Church was original built in the mid 1600’s, and is still being used today. Was originally built out of wood and then later covered with stove. Over time the floors and walls were eaten away by termites, and the church is undergoing a renovation, that they are expected to take 6 – 10 years based on donations. They have just... More

I first saw this Cathedral on the TV "an Island Parish" so was keen to go and see it. It is under major renovation so closed to the public. The steep steps led up to the gates which were chained and padlocked. I knew of this before going but I wanted to see the building which has survived earthquakes but... More

At the moment the Cathedral is undergoing extensive renovations but is still worth a visit, there are a some good examples of 16th 17th century graves.

This is a beautiful cathedral both inside and out. This cathedral has some of the most intricate stone work on the front of it. The large wooden doors also have intricate carvings on them. Walk inside to the beautiful columns and stained glass windows. The outside has a beautiful garden with fountain and if ypu are lucky you might get... More

Apparently termites caused the problems which led to it being closed. The restoration is well under way with termite proofed pews and ceiling. The external roof is now galvanised. It's worth going inside and talking to the guides there (and leave a donation however small to help with on-going restoration. The grounds (cemetery) are nice with lots of trees, and... More

Antigua is a tropical island with pristine beaches a lovely English Harbor and Nelson's Dockyard where everybody anchors. While your here the Cathedral of St. John has some renovation but still looks in near of repair. The town of St. John could also use some hammering and nails, and a coat of paint. The lush color of the rainforest is... More

We had a hard time finding it but when we did it was a lovely old church alive with history. We walked the grounds and into the church. Very nice visit.

This is a beautiful cathedral that has been allowed to fall into serious disrepair. It made me sad to see how even the grave yard surrounding the sanctuary was not maintained and the weeds were allowed to overtake the grounds. Some of the interior has been restored. About a third of the ceiling was finished and it is beautiful. I... More
