Interesting place for a short visit
Interesting place for a short visit. You have to ask the security guard for the key and then it's about a 7 minute walk uphill to the top. The place isn't very well looked after. The views are ok but much views from Fort Barrington.

    Protection for St. John's
Fort James is situated at the entrance of St John's Harbour. It was built by the British in the early 1700's for fear of attack from the French. It was armed with 36 cannons and a garrison of 75 men. They would fire cannons to welcome ships.

Fort James Beach, Antigua cruise stop
The closest beach to the cruise ships, quick $5 pp taxi ride, ask to be dropped off at Millers. Here you will find lounge chairs for rent (we paid $10 each), wooden umbrellas for shade, bathrooms with showers, and a bar and grill for snacks or lunch. The beach is beautiful powdery sand and the water is clear and tranquil. No crowds, no vendors, ideal for anyone looking for a relaxing day.

Just one of the 40 forts built on Antigua by the British in the 17th and 18th centuries, Ft James still stands on one side of the mouth to St John's harbour. The walls are pretty much intact, as is the magazine, but quarters are pretty much dilapidated and the several remaining cannons are almost pure rust. This is a DIY venue, freely accessible at the end of Runaway Bay. The views from this point are fantastic.

It is a deteriorating fort that is interesting to walk around. The cows were cool too. The cannons and The view were awesome to see.

The beach is totally awesome. It is an easy walk. closest beach to St. Johns. Awesome views. Mostly quiet. beach not flooded with visitors like a lot of other beaches. The Fort has great views but is run down. A bit of history and great beach in one. Restaurants also available. and Beach chairs and umbrellas available.

A small fort with great views and loads of cannons and fantastic views but basically being allowed to become overgrown and not maintained. Its OK for a short wander and was free to get into with some limited signage

My husband and I enjoyed a walk from the Sandals hotel to this area. It was just about 2 miles there and 2 miles back. Great location with some amazing views of the water. It is so amazing how history has survived the conditions of the ocean and weather.

This is a nice break from the monotony of sitting on a beach. Very interesting to visit but obviously, it's the remains of a bygone era so don't expect much more than the photos. The water and view is amazing though. What was also amazing, despite the very intense sun, the cannons themselves were very cool to the touch, so shocked at this. The nearby Fort James beach is also a must visit while here, it's one of the nicer beaches on the island
